Gear Oil

Featured Replies

I know this has been done before but has anyone come up with an oil that helps the crunchy change 1st to 2nd - spoils the car:mad: . Various people have recommended Millers, Silkolene etc but its usually only one person - whats everyone else using? I've tried another entire car and that was worse than mine:eek:

Don't have an issue other than that the change is slightly heavier than I'd like.

Recommendation would be 75W90 full synthetic, and do not use a friction modifier such as Molyslip, whatever you do.

hi guys,

i tried silkolene silktran s 75w-90 which is rated as one of the best gear oils around. it was great after it worms but very sticky when cold. VAG original oil was good and motul motyl gear 75w-90 seams to be the best in terms of smooth shifting. the last one is not to expenssive and definitly gets my recommendation.

cheers:thumbup:

Opie Oils recommended I try the Silkolene Silktran stuff, I hope it's good as it cost enough! Will report back after it's in.

i was recommended the same oil by the same guys. that oil is definitly great and very expenssive tho.

my only problem was that it didn't fix my sticky gears. while after i tried vag original oil which was much smoother and finaly i've put in motul motyl gear which is still in the car.

motyl gear is is really awesome. it gives very soft and smooth gear changes just from the start. opie oils have this oil in stock as well and they often have discounts on motul.

good luck

Wish I'd have known this before I bought 3 bottles. :(

It was recommended specifically to cure sticky crunching gears.

I put silkolene silktran 5 in mine and it was terrible. First to second crunched when cold no matter how slowly I changed. I ended up having to dip the clutch to get it out of first into neutral, then let it up and dip it again to get it from neutral into second! Reverse was almost impossible too. I've put standard VAG oil in now and it's perfect now.

I've emailed Guy at Opie to see if I can exchange the silkolene stuff. Wish someone would have posted about this in the thread I started a week or so ago on the same subject before I bought the oil.

....and I didn't see yours. :o

Hopefully Opie will help me out.

I've got the standard VW stuff in at the moment and it's not right so need to try something. Gearbox will be coming out before for a full check anyway when it has the new diff and flywheel fitted.

Guy from Opie has been in touch and has suggested a solution I'm more than happy with. Anyway upshot is I'll be putting in the Silkolene stuff I already have so will make a post once it's in, hopefully in a couple of weeks assuming all the parts I need are here for then.

Allways had issues with fully synthetic myself whenever anyone has asked me to change it. They seem to like semi best and multigrade motor oil (10w40) worked a treat in the 02M TT boxes when they got sticky, Run it in the gearbox for a while and it seems to help the syncros no end.

As that's what I've got I may give that a try if the Silkolene stuff doesn't the job.

Weird, the Syntran I put in mine cured my crunchy 1st to 2nd and sticky reverse. It did take a 1000 miles or so to work though.

There's hope yet then! :)

Have to say that service so far from Opie Oils has been excellent and I will definitely be using them again.
