Fabia speedo dial

Featured Replies

My 2006 Fabia 1.4 speedo is not very user friendly, in so much as it is marked out 10,20,40,60,80,and so on. Between each speed are 4 thin lines, so to drive at 30mph I have to watch the speedo until it reaches 20mph plus 2 lines. This is all very distracting especially if the boys in blue are behind.

Why is the speedo marked out like this, does anyone else find this a problem.

My speedo same ant it a 2001 model, guess from that the VW's are same too, yes is a prob but you will get used to it and i don't think the speedo's very accurate anyway.

Its just minimalist... ;)

Not sure if late models are the same - could be worth investigating.

Get some sort of GPS device and know your speed exactly.

I have a talex on the right hand side of my windscreen and I find it very rare that I look at my speedo. They are not too accurate anyway!!

Thanks Emily-Elizabeth,

I think I might do that.

I have the same problem on my MK1 octavia, all the even numbers are the big ones, but in England almost all speed limits are the odd ones ( if that makes sense)

Looking for a guide on how to change the speedo dials, even fit a Audi s3 dial in fact. Anyone?

It's actually 50/50 with UK public road speed limits..... ;)

20, 40, 60

30, 50, 70

So even if they had the even numbers instead of the odd numbers you'd still be in the same situation....

But anyhows........ It seems to be a VW thing as my GTi was the same.......

Cheers

Dave.

Yes I sure agree, my 2007 car is exactly the same and it becomes a bit hit and miss when trying to stay at 30, 50 & 70 MPH...I would like to question whether the speedo head is UK legal, in that it does NOT show 30, 50 & 70 MPH....What is the UK regulation on the markings of speedometer heads? Where can you find this out?.....Anyone know?....Mr Mogwye

Of course its legal!

30 is inbetween 20 and 40, 50 is in between 40 and 60 and 70 is inbetween 60 and 80! FFS!!

I take it you can't tell the time on an analogue watch without numbers showing every minute & hour either???

Hope this will help;

lol, too true.

What I DO find annoying is that the tacho is easier to read that the speedo. The right hand side of the dash isn't so visible in a RHD car.

No it doesn't really help, not one bit !

Perhaps if you had photographed your Mickey Mouse watch at a distance of 74cm away, partly obscured by your steering while travelling at 50 mph, you might have grasped the problem. Instead of trying to be sarcastic by stating "I take it you can't tell the time on an analogue watch without numbers showing every minute & hour either" while showing a watch photographed at point blank range.

One can only expect such an answer from someone who wears a 'Mickey Mouse' watch.

Guessing the time is irrelavant, however guessing your speed by quickly glancing at the speedo through the steering wheel when you have a police car on your tail sure is.

I was simply adding my own experience to the question posted, because I have the same problem.

Not best pleased Mr Mogwye !!!

I just find that it disappears behind the rim of the steering wheel a bit, perhaps because you're naturally looking to the left a bit as you're driving.

Or it could just be me!!

Prehaps it's down to the position of your seat and steering wheel.

Personally I have no issues either plus as the vRS is increments of 10 up to 90, certaintly have no problem working out my speed :)

Maybe. I just use the tacho to judge my speed most of the time.

I have just got my Fabia and noticed there is no 30 thought about putting a dab of white correcting fluid on the glass to highlight 30mph. As I have a GPS that I use for walking I will check the accuracy for 30 and 60. I thought the police allowed for a 10% error though that might just be wishful thinking on my part.

So far as I know - a speedo, by law, must not under-read so I think a speedo is probably a couple of mph under actual speed.

This accuracy will also be (slightly) affected by tyre pressure as it's dependent on the circumference of the wheel. Bear in mind also the width of the needle and parralax error when you're reading the speedo - you'll get a slightly different reading if you look at the dial squint.

I think that the police allow 10%+2mph before persuing a prosecution on the basis of speed, ostensibly to allow for the tolerance of their equipment.

Of course, bear in mind that they would probably still use your measured speed as part of a prosecution for careless or dangerous driving, or driving without due care if, for example, they considered your speed innappropriate for the prevailing road conditions.

And I'm not suggesting that you can, or should, use this tolerance as an excuse to drive faster than the speed limit - of course!!

Prehaps it's down to the position of your seat and steering wheel.

I think this is almost certainly the case. I like to have the seat and steering wheel both set low and there are certainly combinations where the steering wheel can obscure the dials.

The biggest annoyance I found with the Fabia dials was that they were not luminous/backlit unless the lights were on which meant they became impossible to read if you went into a tunnel/under trees, etc....

Chris

Cost saving, no back light and less numbers means less expensive ink, c'mon people its easy

I think the stupid Fuel Guage is the same.

Why not just mark it with the Full, 3 Quarter, Half, Quarter, Empty, instead of sticking a line every 1/3 of the tank.

I don't suppose it makes much difference, has long as it's not in the red, but still i've got to have a moan!

I have a European Fabia and need to convert the speedo to show mph. Anyone got any ideas? Can you buy just a new binnacle? Or do you have to buy the whole dash panel?

Sure that I saw a thread somewhere about replacing the card behind the speedo. Assuming it's only the numbers that are different this might work.

im still a leaner got me test in 5 weeks. ive never had a problem with the fabia dial. to behonest its easy enough to understand you 20 & 40 and just go for the one in the middle.
