Fabia - Power Steering Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hello all.

Our W-reg Fabia 1.4 Hatch has developed a tendency whereby the power steering warning light comes on on the dashboard "occassionally". On most occasions when the ignition is turned off and on again the light goes off, but then comes on again.

The steering is unaffected, and the manual says that the power steering fluid could be low. Can this be topped up? I can't see where in the engine bay if it can.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Thanks,

D.

Pretty sure there's a power steering reservoir under the bonnet - best to check the handbook for where it is on your car... :D

Not sure for Faby, Octy do have a Power steering reservoir (beside windscreen water tank). The cap has a steering wheel symbol.

Furbys have electro-hydraulic power steering, Octys are hydraulic and hence no warning light. A trip to the dealers to have the fault codes checked should sort out whether it thinks it needs more oil. I don't have a Furby but if it's like other cars with EH steering, the reservoir should be just above the steering rack.

According to the owners' manual...

"The indicator light does not come on if there is insufficient oil in the system" - so does it light when you first start the car, and then go out?

The reservoir is located between the battery and the front of the car - you should see a small cap, but I don't think there's much else to give it away.

The manual does say that if the battery is very low (particularly if you have to jump start) then there won't be enough current to operate the PAS, resulting in a warning light...

Apart from that, a trip to your dealer for them to check the error codes may be in order!

As stimps said, but it is not the easiest thing to find and remove the lid from.

IMHO water in the power steering sensor which is what I had with this problem on the old Y reg Tdi Fabia - get it checked/replaced if necessary by a dealer.

will be the steering angle sensor as dunder 101 says and the resevoir is underneath battery if it's a 8v engine you have to remove battery if 16v then you have access to resevoir top!

The turn angle sensor is

Guys,

Hope this helps........my 2 pennies worth.......the fab comes with electonic power steering as mentioned earlier..........but to my knowledge, this powewr steering light comes on becos the sensor is faulty. Apparently this is an inherent fault from factory and it affects the Fab's with AME engine block code onwards.

I havent had my changed yet, but a good adequate startup in the morning does help in the respect to the light not lighting up during the rest of the day. BTW I drive a 1.4 8v way out in the Far East & from info that I have gathered thru the local & not-so-active Skoda Owners Group here, it's very common amongst the the Fab owners here........

My X Reg has the same habit, regarding it as "character " now.

My Fab had the same problem, sensor went out and the EH steering stopped working. Replaced the sensor and it came back to normal. Cost Singapore $270.

Well known and documented, if you can live with it fine, worry when the power steering doesn't work. A lot have been done under warranty. Doesn't take to long to do either, the techies can do it easily in 30 mins, if it takes any longer start askin questions!!!!!
