Illegal plate or not?

Featured Replies

DVLA requirements are not super clear re personalised plates. Some are obvious no no's which I understand.

The letters/numbers I have changed for this example, but would this be illegal do you think and if so,why?

so,one space between the last two letters.Any thoughts? (before I waste dosh at Halfords!)

Thanks:)

ALso, Halfrauds will insist on your V5/certificate for the plate, and will not alter the style/spacing from what is legally allowed. You need to go to "other" places to get show plates made up, and then if you get caught using them on the road, you'll be slapped with a

Cor blimey.Meanies:D

At least it stops some of the nastier ones.Annoyingly there seem loads out there that really are pushing it.

I'm a bit miffed because any police officer without bottle top glasses could work out this reg without any brain power/eyesight skills:rolleyes: Its not being deceitful in any way IMO

Cheers Jason too.I have actually had mine done at Halfords. These are for the good lady.

Yes the police could recognise it, but the ANPR cameras, Congestion charge cameras and non drivers may have difficulty reading it. With the big increase in use of ANPR cameras, why run the risk as you could be stopped more than you think. You could also recieve a nice letter in the post. If you are caught more than a couple of times you run the risk of having the right to use that plate revoked, and the DVLA will put it back in the pool.

I might have to don the flame-proof suit for this, but if you have to mis-space a plate, I can't really see the point of having it. It's like the owner's trying too hard, IMO.

Yeap, I used to love making plates at halfords!!! :D

When I first started you could make anything anyone asked for without any ID or docs or anything, now you need ID for yourself and V5 or other ownership document of the car.

Anyone know how much Halfords charge for a set of plates with the Euro/GB sign at the side?

I have been reliably informed that my number plates are technically illegal.

Therefore I carry a legal set in the boot, and if questioned the one's on the car are 'show plates' and I forgot to take them off.

I may be fibbing of course.

Agreed. If you're going to all this effort for a plate, you'd be better off sticking with standard and just getting a sticker saying your name.

Mine say Mr Grumpy on them.

Is that ok?

Illegal mate had a plate that said "A 16 VSI" spaced as "A 16V SI" police would take regular U turns to come and chat to my mate about his plates. The owner before him had spaced the letters and my mate eventually had the plates confiscated by DVLA for not displaying them correctly (can't remember the exact wording of why).

The other reason they dont want you moving the spaces is because of SPEC camera's and ANPR as they have problems with these and when they do they get manually flagged and the operator is then meant to send out a penalty notice for the plates. Rumour also is 2 line reg plates cannot be picked up by SPEC's ;)

Considering the technology used in recognising a plate, it seems a major design flaw that it is rendered useless by incorrect spacing. I could understand well placed screw caps causing it problems, but not spacing....

250+ quid for 7 characters on a bit of plastic?! Behave!

Chris

thus the reason so many boy racers are using 2 line plates ;-)

ANPR doesn't usually struggle with spacing nor two line plates (as they are, after all, a "standard" shape too).

If your plates read "MR GRUMPY" then yes. If your plate reads in the format "AA00 AAA", with a sticker underneath saying "Mr Grumpy" then yes.

If your plate reads "M2 6RMP" then no.

Get a set of Polish plates instead then. Immune from all traffic offences or so it would seem.

Suspect that's more to do with issues of enforcement rather than the quality of ANPR (Polish plates aren't invisible... ;) ).

 but is there also a register of foreign vehicles in the UK?

Saw a plate recently that had 333 in the number but they had all been reversed so looked like curly EE E (yes, a space in there too!). Hate to think what ANPR would make of that.

Makes you wonder why they've not been pulled over for them already - I must pass a couple of Police vehicles every day to and from work and also see blatantly illegal numberplates like this.

I think as long as you do 5mph under the speed limit, then you can have any type of numberplate you want - the Police are only concerned with speeding, infact I'm sure all other motoring offences are ignored.
