2.0TDI DSG - Limp Mode

Featured Replies

I'm having some issues with my Octy, it's 18 months old and has now covered a little under 55k.

In the past month it has gone into limp mode on 5 occasions, all when the engine is cold but needed to use the power. I live half a mile from a main 70mph Dual Carraigeway (A303) and generally exit a roundabout and need to have decent accelaration due to other traffic but the car doesn't like it! It generally tops out at 2.5k RPM and the only way to overcome this is to drop into neutral, turn off ignition, turn back on ignition and then stick back into drive! All whilst trying to avoid the artic coming up behind you! Not ideal!

Any ideas why this would be, never had the issue in any other car, 1.8T Golf, A4 1.9TDI so not sure why the Octy doesn't like it.

Cheers for any advice offered!

Steve

Have you got a cable Steve?? Managed to get any codes from it?

Would it be possible for you to warm it a little before giving it a bootfull?

Unfortunately haven't got the CAN-BUS, only the OBDII so not been able to read the codes.

It is possibile that it could be warmed slightly, to be honest probebly 4 days a week I sit at a set of lights for a minute before getting to the A303 so it warms a bit more and isn't a problem, most of the time I just forget and it catches me out!

er yes, my car started out doing this, then a few hundred miles later I had the 'exhaust system' warning light come up, then another few hundred miles later still, the turbo collapsed, sucking all the oil out of the engine and destroying most of it together with the full exhaust system by contaminating it with all the oil and coolant :thumbdwn:

the car had been in and out of the dealers twice to diagnose the fault but they couldn't tell what was wrong....until it blew up

oh, just to say that my car was built in July 2005 but when it blew up the mileage reading was just 14,000 miles.......

Hmmm, maybe I better get it booked in...

yeah, I think that would be a good idea, especially as your car seems to be about the same age as mine (roughly) and I know of at least one other that went POP! from that manufacturing period..... (ie mid 2005) ;)

Just a thought - could it be anything to do with the 'traction control' software? Maybe you're setting it off if you try to pull away too quickly, particulary if it's on a turn?

Doubt it, the traction control light should flash and he hasn't mentioned it...

and it does sound very like my problem which ended up with new turbo/intercooler/EGR/exhaust system and ultimately a new engine as well

Definately not traction, on the last journey before towing it was having the problems on flkat roads at a constant speed just needing gradual accelaration.

It's in the garage at present and I have a Zafira for the weekend (thanks VW Assistance), dealer can't find any major fault codes which is concerning cos it's definately got a major fault!

Just picked up the car, all sorted under warranty, turbo has been replaced.

Only driven gently but no whistle from the turbo like before so that must have been a sign of the turbo on the way out. Coolant loss was suspected through the turbo also.

Wpuld recommend that if your turbo whistles at low revs both when accelarating and deccelarating (sounds a bit like a siren!) that you get it checked out!

A good and very fortunate result then Steve. Do you know if anything else was changed, does the car feel as powerful as before ;)

Very fortunate! Haven't had a chance to push it as was stuck behind traffic on Salisbury plain earlier, going to Southampton later and then down to Yeovil so plenty of opportunity to see!

Had to push dealer to make sure I could collect the car as I had the A3 I was using in the meantime broken into yesterday in Southampton, it topped off my already crap day!

Just out of interest Peter, what was the outcome of that , given the engine had done so few miles, sounds like expensive stuff ?.

Regards,

Bob.

outcome was new engine/turbo/egr/intercooler/full exhaust system  - fortunately all done under warranty with a long term courtesy Octy II for the total of 3 months that it took - I've done over 2000 miles since I got it back with no probs and the car now runs fine

Small world I only live about 5 miles from A303.

I have been having the same issues with my W reg 2000 Octavia only had it 3 weeks so starting to get really worried now. Also had the PAS rack spew all it oil out of the end. I bought an Octavia because of the reputation for reliability. Not so sure now. Although I do have a fault code.

Will listen to the Turbo next week after the rack is fixed !!

A wild stab in the dark would point me towards sticking VNT vanes on your car.

Try the search and you'll find some nice pictures and a guide.
