Fabia Boot Opening on bumps

Featured Replies

I've had my Fabia Elegance for about 2 weeks now. It an 01 on a X plate.

I'mn getting on really well with the car, but have one particular problem that is quite annoying:

I live in a fairly rural area and when im driving along the country roads the constant small bumps seem to release the boot catch and pop the boot open, as if i pulled the boot release next to the drivers seat.

This of course results in a god-awful loud beep as the 'boot open' warning comes on on the dashboard.

At first I thought it was me not closing the boot properly, as i did initially have some trouble figuring out how to get the boot to shut tight (do you close it softly or hard?) but now i think it may be some kind of fault with the catch that seems to be triggere by by the car bumping down and up in succession (insert 'Carry On' style pun here).

Does anyone have any idea what could be to blame?

It could be the catch is out of adjustment whereby it is so tight that you have to slam the boot to get it to close and isn't quite latching it enough. You could slacken it off a bit, the loop on the body is held by 2 spline drive bots under the 2 covers, slacken them off and push it down slightly, this will cause the lid to sit higher.

there are also adjustable rubber bump stops in the bottom corners of the tailgate. If you do start to adjust the tail gate, you may have to fiddle with it to get it spot on, or you will continulally get the warning light on the dash - thought - is it actually open? it can be shut but if the catch is not adjusted spot on you will get the warning, the switch is in the lock. once you have it adjusted properly the tailgate will shut with a medium push

Thanks for your replies, I'll have a fiddle this weekend and see what i can figure out.

Kwacka - The boot is actually opening, not fully but up to the point where it's caught on the latch but not shut tight. This also happens regardless of whether it is locked or not.

From what you've said it probably is the catch as a medium push is the guaranteed way to not have the boot shut tight.

Another possibility is a fault in the electric switch which you push to open the boot from the outside.

I considered that, but I dont think its the culprit as that will open the boot fully, rather than just placing it one the latch.

A quick chat with my brother last night bought up the possibility of it being a cable from the button by the drivers door being set too tight and vibrating over bumps. Is this also likely???

The rubbers in the bottom corners aren't adjustable AFAIK beyond pulling them out a bit, however there are hard plastic bumpers on the sides of the boot opening, near to where the bottom of the rear window would be. You'll need a Torx screwdriver to adjust them, but you can slide them forward or back as required...

trust me..................the rubbers in the botttom corners are adjustable by screwing in or out, give it a try

I know; just like the ones for the rear seat backs.

But they're screwed hard against the body of the boot lid for a reason - that being to stop them flexing around the threads and thus snapping. Sure, they may do the same as the plastic bumpers, but it's not their design intent. Plus, being compressible, you'd need to have them unscrewed quite a way before it would have any effect on where the boot lid sits when latched shut. Why mess with something and make it do what it's not designed to, when there are parts fitted that are specifically meant to be adjustable to allow the shut-line of the boot to be adjusted?

Just my 2ps...

thanks guys. Im going to try adjusting the recieving hook this wekend - i think thats probably the most likely culprit.

But if anyone else has any ideas for what it may be please feel free to add your views!

p.s. sorry i forgot to mention it before - my first post, though I have been lurking for a while! always nice to find a depository of knowledge like this on the web.
