Necessity of reinforced sump guard on 40mm drop?

Featured Replies

I am considering coilovers and a drop of 40mm, and am all to aeare of the issue of the plastic sump guard as standard not being strong enough if hit. I do urban driving on roads and motorways mostly. Is a re-inforced sump really needed or not?

Has anyone on 40mm drop had the sump guard struck or hit with anything?

Cheers

Stu

I had a full Eibach setup on my Fabia, with the metal sump guard. The guard had seen a fair bit of action by the time I took it off.

On the first Keswick meet, I took people down "the struggle" where there is a 'jump' ;) think there was a couple of sump guard hits there! lol...

if you do hit something without the protection, you could loose your gearbox as well as the sump!

Looking at the last few threads several people have commented on this and the fact there are issues with the low sump, I'd say that was a good indication of how much of an issue it could. How many people do you think take their VRS anywhere other than town/Motorway roads? How many fields do you see VRS's in? (The right way up that is  )

I have a full Eibach setup and although I don't have the guard, I worry endlessly as it's low, about as low as you want it to be ;)

Also, why do you need a 40mm? If it is purely cosmetic then stop being a tart and be practical about this!

A drop of 40mm, may pose a problem with driveshaft CV joints and rubbers.

sorry to hijack thread but how much is a sump guard and where can I buy one ?

cheers ,Garry

They are no longer available. It was a one off batch made.

Cheers Stu , I'll have to speak with my mate that made the one for my rally car,,, have to go and make a template now.

I have just spied a skid plate assembly on vagcat in the accesorys part. is this not an alloy jobbie or just the orginal plastic one?

thanks john

Hmmm. Even if it was alloy, it wouldn't give you that much more protection
