they did suggest that at the dealer - but i was a bit hacked off that they should suggest bending bits of my brand new car especially as the mechanic said he would have to be careful not to snap the wiper arm.

Tried vinagar as someone suggested and it has worked. No more judder.

My wipers last about a year (you are supposed to change them every year anyway). Last brand new set of Bosch ones I bought juddered at first but seemed to bed in after about a week.

Edit: Oh dear - stable door there...

Well, I did as KLM suggested; left the rubbers overnight in a tray of vinegar. I've driven it for a couple of hours this afternoon in the type of weather that causes it the most - occasional light drizzle - and so far (touch wood) no judder.
