Windscreen Wiper Judder

Featured Replies

Having a problem with my windscreen wipers at the mo.

When i put them on they judder accross the windscreen. At first I though it might be the blades not bending as the wiper changes direction (not sure what the correct terminology is for this) so that the wiper arms were pushing the blade against the screen. (very badly worded but I hope u know what I'm trying to say!)

Anyway after taking a closer look it appears that this isn't the case. It's like the wipers are sticking to the screen. This though is reinforced by the fact that when you spray the windscreen with screen wash the juddering stops as if it has been lubricated by it. After about 30 seconds once all the screen wash has gone, the juddering starts again.

I have tried to clean the screen with a variety of different cleaners but it makes no difference.

With all this rain it is getting increasingly annoying - help/ideas greatfully recieved.

Cheers

Mark.

Buy some new ones. ;):D

New set fitted on Saturday morning by Skoda. No different

Dealer was no help!

You may have some oil or other contamination on the screen, you need to use a good glass cleaner or a water/vinegar mix to try and remove any road grime that has built up.

New wiper blades already on an SE ?

I have the exact same problem. I've tried vinegar on the screen and no difference. Had new wipers fitted in Jan so think these may be knackered.

The yellow triangle thing on the drivers side is 'just' starting to show through too.

Aero here we come.

Try neat washing up liquid applied with green nylon scourer (scourers with yellow foam block and green thin nylon scouring portion).

Then spray blades with vinegar as they can 'harden up'.

Used to have same problem and combination of two above methods has done the trick - plus I spray the blades with vinegar now on a weekly basis.

Tried fairy/glass cleaner/vinager/cillet bang degreaser and sponge/scourer thingy - nothing seems to have made any difference.

Car only 6 weeks old so as u can imagine was not impressed when tried to charge me for a new set!

Will keep trying though - maybe something particularly greasy got on there or both sets of wiper rubbers are just cr4p. Will try spraying with vinager regularly and see if they get better.

Cheers for the advice

IIRC there is a 1500 mile on consumables.

I agree, thoroughly cleaning the screen should make all the difference. If thats not working then get the dealer to have a look. :)

Just possible there's some of the 'wax' seal still on the windscreen (I believe they still coat new cars up for transportation etc).

The repeat treatment with the vinegar works for me - takes some time to take effect i.e. stop the squeal and judder, and then with regular application mine are so silent and clean the screen very well.

I wouldn't have thought the blades themselves are to blame esp as they're only (probably) less than 6 months old - I know car is only 6 weeks from purchase time but who knows how long it has been 'stood around' (hope you take that nicely).

What's the normal lifespan for wipers BTW? Mine are just over 6 months old.....

I'd expect them to streak etc and the rubber to fall apart like all my other cars rather than judder. These appear to have lasted the shortest length of time of any wipers I've had. They're dealer supplied Valeo's BTW.

True - even though I only picked up car 6 weeks ago it has prob been stood around. I know it was in the dealer showroom for a few weeks before I bought it. - Kept saying I can't afford it but if its there next time...... I did this a few time then though 'what the hell'

Unfortunately done 4K miles so a bit over the 1500 for consumables.

Lifespan - had read somewhere approx 1 yr but this is so dependent on so many factors.

All I can say is we've had car 8 months (bought 2nd hand), wipers squeaked and juddered from day 1.

Tried various things (including Halfords Rain Repellent on windscreen but removed it as I'm convinced it led to really poor visibility at night in rain) until settled on weekly diet of vinegar and (less frequently, the neat washup and scourer) and since then the wipers have been fine i.e. not swapped them or anything and have no idea of how old they were when we bought the car.

Yellow triangle?

Yeah, the wear indicators on the top. You get em on some wipers.

Hi,

I had a similar thing on my Mk 2 Golf which I put up with for years until they failed the MOT and a new set was the same.

I then tried a more expensive replacement and hey presto all gone!

Alan

hello, have you tried rain-x? works on mine, had blades on 18mth and no judder.

Ye always use rainx. Fantastic product.

Took wiper rubbers off, put them on a tray, covered in vinager and left overnight.

Hey presto - sorted. No probs since. Will continue to use vinager regularly now.

Thanks for the help.

1 year had mine on for 18 months and don't think they were new when i got the fabia.

Mine been on God knows how long, passed 2 mots while I had them. Yes they judder when it is dry or on single wipe but if raining a lot and on constant wipe they don't do it. |I never bought the car new either so no idea how long they been on

May be leading people astray here, if so apologies.

In the Tips section there was post pointing out that rear wipers can sometimes judder due to them being put on the wrong way round in the factory. You can check that they are right by the position of the metal prongs on the outside. Mine was wrong; changed it round and for the first time no noise, judder or streaks. I dont know if this is possible on the front.

More common answers - try cleaning both the screen and wipers with metal polish. Silicone is often the culprit.

Empty the washer bottle in case it is contaminated (sounds odd, but happened to me)

Put wipers through the dishwasher (when SWMBO is out).

Could your wiper arm be bent?

May only be slightly but that would be enough to make it judder.

Try cleaning the screen with good glass cleaner (Autoglym?) or methylated spirit.

  • 1 month later...

I have this problem with mine. The car's 18 months old, so the delivery wax should have gone by now.

This is its third set of wipers; the first set were replaced by the dealer on its first service, but these started to judder after a few months, so I replaced them myself with Bosch ones (they were the best make on previous cars), but the new ones started juddering almost immediately.

I've polished the windscreen, I've tried vinegar, glass cleaner, etc. I've even used Rain-X, but all it did was smeared on the upstroke.

It's mostly the passenger's side. The only thing I can think of is that the spring is too tight pushing the blade against the screen.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned twisting the wiper arms slightly. Of course, one should make sure screen and wipers are clean first of all. But if this does not work, it only requires a very slight twist of the arms away from the direction in which the judder occurs.
