Quick ram question

Featured Replies

I am working on a twitchy computer for a mate (BSOD Problem)

Been trying to replicate the problem, ended up putting folding at home on there and got it crashing everytime. So i removed one stick of ram worked great, then i put it back and it's been sat here for about three hours happily folding away and browsing

So is it possible that reseating the ram fixed the blue screen error

I have seen it before when it ain't sat right causing bios errors but blue screen ?????

I believe so - read this long time ago.

There are freeware RAM testing utilities about if you wish to 'go further'.

Just Google - 'freeware RAM testing' - should come up with the answers

Sod's law strikes again :thumbdwn:

i think on a PC its mem check 64 that will verify that its deffo that stick of ram

it might not be the ram though sadly, could be a dodgy socket, controller, driver or even a simple conflict between a certain bit of software and a certain piece of hardware but only when on a certain motherboard etc

have seen it before, bloody random clashes are a nightmare.

Go grab a copy of the ultimate Boot CD, there are plenty of utilities on it for checking RAM, just burn it to CD, boot from CD and then follow the menu. Anybody who is playing with PC's should have a copy of this in their CD wallet

It crashed again over night so more investigating is needed

I had a copy of that somewhere but my filing system in the house leaves a lot to be desired i'll download the new version now...... cheers tony

Another vote for UBCD. It's fantastic. I used this recently to diagnose an unstable system and it was the memory that was at fault.

It'll be worth trying one stick at a time and then each stick in a different slot. That way, if you have any failures, you'll know exactly what's not playing ball :)

Can anyone recommemd me a test on this disc

Either the memtest or the memtest+.

Doesn't really matter, they all run similar tests and if the memory is faulty, either will pick it up :)

let memtest run overnight.. that should rule out the memory...

Could be a heat problem if it goes while folding... i use a little util called coretemeter to monitor my (dual) core temps.. but theres loads about.

 Not such a quick question after all

Well it ran memtest for 6 hrs with no errors

But on Stress CPU's test it throws a Spurious 8259A IRQ7 fault whilst running but it keeps going until it gives a Segmetation fault

edit.. Just googled it whoa it's way over my head

Right I've started again as i stayed up to late doing it and got the 2 sticks jumbled up so I'm gonna start with memtest i'm gonna let that run a full pass.

Then it's the stress cpu test. If that doesn't make it fall over then it's fixed, Simply by re-seating and wiping the dust off from around the slots

P.S. The prime test just sits there doing nothing is it supposed to do that ?????

Fingers crossed - what you have to do for buddies

They got the ****e deal really i've promising to look at it for about 6 months lol

What kinda computer is it?

Maybe try removing the cpu heatsink, cleaning it all up and puttin some fresh heat-compound on there... usually memtest will flag up any memory problems pretty rapidly.. i think its more likely to be the CPU or mobo.

It's an asrock board xp3000 athlon it seems ok now tbh it's running at 46 degrees which is about right

If i still plays up i think you may be right Col as the fault on the cpu is backing this up

Am i right in assuming That 6 passes on memtest means it's run 6 times

If so it's not shown any errors

edit It's running at 66 degrees which is well within the correct range

IMHO 66c is too high for a athlon.. i would see about re-seating the heatsink. and try and get that below 50c full-load.

yes 6 passes means its run 6 times.
