Felicia gearbox issue

Recommended Posts

Hi guys and girls!

I have a 1998 mk1 felicia diesel. which has a knackered diff. I have a good 1.3 gearbox (in bits).

Can I take the diff from the 1.3 and put it in the diesel gearbox?

Will it fit, will it show a true reading on the speedo.

Please help as I love this car and I don't want to have to get rid of it.

savage.

yeah you can use the differential, they are the same, and so is the speedo drive gear. but you will need to swap the crownwheel over because they are different sizes

Thank you.

Will changining the crown wheel affect the performace eg will the diesel engine rev more or will it be the same? As I would like it to be 100% stock.

P.S. will I have to change the pinion aswell or can I use the original one?

that's what i mean.... you need to put the crown wheel from your 1300 dif onto the diff from the diesel box if you want to use it.... besides the diesel crownwheel wont fit the output shaft on the 1300cc box anyway

Forgive me I am having trouble understanding, I know nothing about gearboxes.

The diesel diff is chipped and so failing to sellect gears correctly.

The diesel gearbox needs another diff.

The diesel gearbox is going back in (when fixed)

So I need to put the 1.3 crown wheel (including pinion?) into the diesel gearbox

will the diesel drive shafts/cv joints fit the new 1.3 crown wheel?

oh sorry... i miss read the original post...

you need to use the crown wheel in the box it originally came from because the drive pinion on the end of the shaft is matched to that crownwheel....

are you sure it's the diff that's causing the bad gear change.... normally they dont crack, they just break up into a million pieces

Would I just be able to use the diff from the 1.3 to put into the 1.9 diesel?

My mate took it to his gearbox specialist who said the diff is chipped. I will try to get a mare accurate description for you.

The gearbox was taken apart to get the speedo drive cog out that had fallen in and was (by us) obviously not put together correctly and driven (down road and back) hence the problem. It was fine before all this happened.

:iagree: - you need to use the CWP from whichever box they originally came from. They're what basically set your overall gear lengths (mph/1000rpm) for one thing, and you don't want to drop the gearing in a diesel by 25%!

Also, as Tom says, it's highly unlike that your diff is the cause of a bad change. The usual causes are one or more of:-

a) Mis-adjusted linkage

B) Clutch dragging

Either of these might make all gears awkward, or only some of them.

c) General wear in the box. This is most likely if one gear is awkward (probably second or third), but the others are all fine

Savage, we were both posting together there. IME chipped teeth in the differential gears (not the CWP, the ones in the diff cage that bolts to the CW) are likely to make the gearbox sound noisy, in proportion to road speed (not engine speed), but not affect the change quality. It wants sorting, but it should be a red herring as far as change quality goes.

That sounds like linkage adjustment, mis-assembly or wear. Well other than the noisy that is. I'm not sure about that.

Before spending out money on anything else, I'd check and recheck the linkage adjustment. If that doesn't sort the change, then, if 5th and reverse share a selector rail in that box, suspect an issue with that selector rail.

Hi reading this post i am not that sure what my problem is with my gear box / linkage ect but i have got a very noisy car gear stick at the moment that rattles like hell, basically the noise stops if i hold on to it , I have recently had a new seal put on to try and stop the problem as some of the gears were tempermental to get into at times, i thought this might help the problem but its got slightly worse. The gear selecting is ok now but the rattling is annoying! please can i have some advice guys

probably a loose ball jiont at the base of the gear stick causing it to wobble and vibrate while the vehicle is moving.

To see if its this, pull off the leather gear stick covery thing, and at the very bottom of the hole you will see the ball jiot. Absolutely pack it with grease and take it for a short spin. if noise stops for a while you will need to replace the gear stick and linkages!
