hhmm... This looks very interesting.. although I'm not sure I'll still have a Skoda..

But would you be allowed... :P

how about a tour of the uk?

how about a tour of the uk?

I agree

More people would be able to make a UK Road Trip.. me included :P

how about a tour of the uk?

This should be the subject of a seperate thread

IMO the UK roads are a waster if you love driving, they are clogged with cameras, toooooooo many cars & arseholes who cant drive.

Once you have done a European enthusiasts road trip you will know what I mean. Also the cost of Hotels, food, drink etc in the UK not to mention Fuel is a total rip off & will add heavily to what appears to be a cheap trip !!.

If you do the Continental jaunt out of the July/August holiday season the roads are virtually empty compared with the UK.

Another + is if you get a tug from the authorities unless you are driving at silly speeds or like a **** all you get is a fine & no pixie points. Again this will change in a few years so I would really encourage anyone who loves driving to do it now before its too late.

Im off in a couple of weeks for a long weekend thrash through France to get another fix, Millau, Play in the Gorge under, across to Provence, play on mount Ventoux & home. It honestly is that good on the continent.

I could so do something like this - I'm going to start downloading the italian job music in preparation!

This was taken at Stelvio when we were there a couple of years ago, I was about an hour behind & went up in the dark

Going down in the morning

Reason I mentioned it is not all of us can afford to go on jaunts abroad, im quite happy in this country thanks.

This years international trip has'nt even started yet but I have already got ideas for an Alpine road trip for 2008.

The idea is loosely based on the successful format currently offered by another forum for car enthusiasts but with more automotive exoctica than the humble Skoda!. Basically the trip will take in four countries France, Monaco, Italy & Switzerland. The route takes in some breathtaking scenery on some of the finest roads to be found anywhere in Europe and will be over approximately 8 days.

This will take a LOT of organising and of course will not be as cheap as this years Czech trip but if there is sufficient interest you will have plenty of time to start saving (rough idea on cost would be

another czech trip or one around france (or even a uk one) then id be interested, but cannot afford whats been discussed so far.

how many are serious about this???

i know it's going to take a lot of organising, but the sooner we get names down and try sort out a date **/**/08.

give us time to book hols & pay deposits / save... :D

Dates is probably the first thing to sort as this has a direct bearing on cost.

If it has to be July & August, roads are busier which is an obvious downside but also Hotels are busier so rates are sometimes higher & even hotels with constant rates all year are unlikely to offer much of a group discount. Equally the Tunnel or Ferries again will be more expensive

From my experience on quite a few runs I would also suggest around 20 cars as an absolute max, thats 40 people & probably enough to organise for a first trip. That sort of number gives good barganing power at hotels but is not too big to reduce the choice of hotels. Ive done runs with 100 cars & you are stuck with The big chain hotels.

What sort of hotels do people want, there are certain ones that are a must, ie if you do the Stelvio stay in the hotel on top, its a Ski lodge so not silly money but an incredible experience. Others can be the french motels, Campaniele or similar, bit like a travelodge. At least one more nice hotel as well with a formal dinner would be nice, possibly the last night.

Dop people have any Budgets in mind & dont forget it wont include whatever you have to pay towards the car (tyres etc) & fuel.

Just watched Top Gear WOW I cant want to drive those roads :D

STEVE If you need any help organising this one I don't mind helping :D

finding good nice safe hotels

Please organise it.

Reckon September would be a good time, fewer tourists, cheaper rates, and we could call in on Dosky on the way home . As mentioned previously only too happy to help with the planning, but dates are most important so holidays can be booked :).

PS sod the expense, its only money :D

but dates are most important so holidays can be booked :).

What do you care about dates, you just book half the bloody year off!:D

:iagree: :cool::D

Also have a blast in some of those tunnels

Well if you thought top gear was good let me tell you from experience. They need to shoot their researcher, yes those roads are good & boxes to be ticked but they missed many better ones, some they would have driven within a few miles of them.

Europe is fantastic & once you get onto the back roads it gets better, a couple of weeks ago we did 23Km up a mountain, gained 1.6Km in Altitude, perfect road surface & not a single car on the road, saw Lancia parked up ready to test some prototypes, you just need to know where to look :D :D :D, Then theres the Pagani test route & Lambos ....................

As for Stelvio, is it the best, no way, fantastic to have driven it, Ive been up & down 4 times but it dosent flow that well & its also used by trucks & cyclists so can get congested but yes, definately worth doing once.

As for timing, avoid the holiday season & especially avoid the period of the "tour de France" September should be good

Had a quick glance at a road atlas and came up with a little trip that could also take in the Dosky meet and a free day in Prague, would involve a lot of 'hard' driving 2,800 miles aprox. and 10 nights accomodation, road tolls etc.

Just an idea:O

If you can manage that with a quick look what would you come up with after studying it for a while, That mileage in 10 days is very achievable for just about everybody. We did Millau, provence & a few twisties in between, left 3PM Friday, back home Monday night & covered 1940 Miles

Theres a couple of Gems youve misssed but others Ive never heard of.

Not sure what time of year you are going but roads like Stelvio are shut for a lot of the year due to snow etc so check your dates.

I think an over night Stop somewhere in Millau would be good as the Bridge is well worth a long stop :D

also a long evening somewhere along the south of France would be good

i.e. Millau first night (long drive)

2nd night short drive to south of france and a really nice posh hotel for a good evening meal night out etc :D
