Rear bumper dent - replace or repair?

Featured Replies

SWMBO backed into a bollard today in the new car. :(

Damage is limited to a large dent and scrape in the bumper.

Without a photo, does anyone have an opinion as to whether it can be repaird or replaced?

If replaced, how much am i looking at (if I decide not to go down the insurance route)?

Car is a Black Magic VRS estate, damage appears to be ,imited to rear bumper only. No parking sensors.

Cheers

If the plastic bumper is dented without having cracked the paint then you may be able to pop it out by heating it up.

Just had a repair done to the rear bumper of my motor home (kindly dented scratched and cracked by unknown driver when it was parked up). To replace it would have cost a fortune. A mobile repairer came out and did a marvellous job including plastic welding and paintwork (which was an awkward match) with result that you wouldn't know it had been dinged. Cost

You might see if you can push the dent out from behind yourself, plastic bumpers are pretty flexible when it comes to this (they're designed for it).

Then, if the paint is not too badly scratched how about just leaving it?

Chances are it will get damaged again in a while, maybe by someone else on whose insurance you can then claim!

or maybe personal pride does not allow this as an option.

Thanks for all the replies.

I managed to have a better look this morning. The dent is tiny, and almost invisible, so am not too worried by that. I think the problem will be the paint - it is down to the white layer (primer?) and feels as if the underlying plastic has been scraped (feels very rough, like a burred edge).

I think I'll take it along to the dealer and see what they say.

Bit of filler and a respray from a small, non-dealer bodyshop? Should be cheap compared with new bumper done by dealer.

just put a sticker over it. A K+N air filter one would look good?

agree with this. some t**t put a 6 inch long gash in my rear bumper, dealer quoted me "about
