How bloomin heavy is air con?!

Featured Replies

Appreciate it is not for a Skoda but I'm looking to retrofit air con to my car.

From what I can gather we are talking about 15kg:eek: (and a cost of

Google turns up this image for a Peugeot 205 air con system:

which should give a bit of an idea of what it looks like...

Could quite easily see how that would work out at about 15kg, and retro-fitting it must be a bit of a 'mare! :)

IIRC, back in the days before air con was common place, it used to be a "dealer fit" option and they'd get an independent air con company to fit it. I know this used to happen on the UK Scooby turbos and about

I'm looking to remove my system if anyone fancies trying to retrofit it to their furby. :D It definitely weighs a lot, especially the compressor. ;)

Aircon was a dealer-fit option on toyotas until recently..

anyone have an idea how much it costs to get air-con checked/re-gassed? does vag-com have any aircon related stuff?.. mine seems a bit weak these days

Mobile specialist came to my house and did the Fabia on my drive.

When I looked around for a pressure check and regas (if needed) it was between

I know it's not light, but 15kg isn't heavy

On the fabia vRS, the aircon compressor alone weighs about 15kg+ I reckon. By removing it, and all the rad/pipework, I expect to lose a bag of cement off the front of my car. Should help a bit with understeer I reckon.

You will also gain a few bhp and/or mpg. But personally I would rather stay cooool.

Colin, VW have a nationwide offer of

Although this can be countered by opening the windows to stay cool.... :D

My usual tactic. :) Although you lose about 0.05% of your aerodynamics with your window down 2" Also found in general that having regular air blown straight at you on #2 fan speed is cooling enough too

Cost me about 40 quid on my A3.

Where am i looking on the vagcom for this?

On mine, this shows up as a fault in the central convenience module. I think it's number 15 on the list? Doing a comprehensive fault code scan should bring it up if there's an issue.

Yeah I just did a full scan for faults and you should see the problems appear under the central convenience unit. Mine was the Evap Temp Sensor and there's an excellent guide by Mr Apogee on how to replace one of these without following the Skoda way (which involves dismantling half the car!)

Chris

I don't know about weights on the Fabia but on the Lupo Gti, the weight of the complete air-con system inc compressor was around the 20kg mark.
