Wiring directly to the battery

Featured Replies

Can anyone please help me with the following. My skoda is a new Fabia Spirit Plus Combi (estate) 1.9 TDI.

I'm trying to connect radio communication equipment directly to the battery. Because of the potential large power consumption, I don't want to use the board net.

What would be the best way to guide the power feed from the center console to the battery? I don't want to take too much of the interior apart, since it is a company car. I've thought about following the bonnet cable but that is more or less tucked away by coverings. How do they come off? Or is there a better/easier way?

I'm open to suggestions.

Best off going behind the glovebox and through a grommet into the engine bay. Sure you know this, but ensure the power lead is fused close to the battery. :) How power huingry is the equipment you're using? Can't be as hungry as a 500w amp can it?

Thanks, the tranceiver is fused with 20 Amp fuses, so it can get hungry. I've looked behind the glove box, found a fan unit and a lot of sound absorbing padding. I suppose this grommet you're talking about, is behind the padding? Remember, all has to be re-assembled as well...

And again...

Or do you mean to use a grommet that is already stuffed with wiring. My powerlines are, let's say prepared for the job, so that may be a bit of a struggle to persuade them in. Usually cars have unused grommets, don't they, specially for this purpose?

This may be of use to you when locating the grommet.

Dont just rely on the fuse in the equipment, also place a fuse as close to the battery as possible, just in case something happens to the wiring or the equipment before its fuse.

Thanks a bundle guys!

Fletch's photo's did the trick!

No I won't forget the fuses close to the battery. It wasn't so much the electrical bit but the 'puzzle' bit that I was worried about. I now have one Fabia dismantled on the driveway, but at least I now know how to get it right again.

Thanks again.
