Fuel tank cover problem

Featured Replies

Filled up the wifes 2006 Fabia 1.2 Sport today. The filler cover is opened from within the cabin by the usual small pull thingy.

Opened up OK but refuses to close. It just bounces back off the catch.

Have studied the handbook and the Haynes manual but can't even a reference to it.

Wondered for a while if it had an electric supply for security reasons but no mention of any fuse so I have come to the conclusion that it is purely a mechanical system with a cable.

Any ideas what the problem is. The car is under warranty but the nearest Skoda dealer is quite a distance so just in case there is an easy fix ?.

Sturdee.

It is an easy fix - The cable has come detached at the filler cap end. The skoda dealer can fix this, but it's an easy DIY fix too. Go in the boot, pull back the trim on the right hand side - some of the plastic around the boot edge might need removing temporarily (just pull hard on them) - Then you should be able to see the cable end for the filler cap, and just re-shove it in the slot. :)

It's operated by a Bowden cable and the end has come unclipped from the fuel filler - a common problem. You need to peel back the carpet ahead of the o/s/r lights, and re-insert the cable into its socket. Some folk glue it in place if the problem persists.

Beat you by two minutes. :P

Thanks guys that was a very quick and such an helpful reply. Will have a go and let you know how I got on with it.

Can't do it just at this moment cause I've just had a couple of tots or so of Scotlands finest before dinner. Purely on Doctors orders I emphasise and not that I enjoy the stuff.

Thanks again,

It's awful when you have to take medicine and it's even worse if the blend isn't quite right, you may want to double double check.

You can use a couple of cable ties and some gaffer tape to prevent the cable becoming detached again.

Took the side trim off and there it was with the cable hanging out. Took several tries to get it back in as it obviously only fits one way and took several attempts.

Looked for a way to secure it and settle on electrical insulating tape.

Not much room in there and you need fingers like a midwife. Only suceeded in pulling the end out again and had to go through the process of finding the correct way to insert it again.

All OK in the end but isnt it a flimsy attachment. Only needs a gentle tug to pull it out. The rubber plug which holds it in is so weak.

Thanks for your big help guys and you have saved me a trip to the dealer.
