Furby vRS MPG

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

My Furby vRs was delivered on Friday and I've done 200 miles so far and am very impressed. The short dual carriage way where I used to get stuck behind lorries because I couldn't overtake them in time is no longer an obstacle :D

One issue I have at the moment is with the mpg. It is a bit lower than I was expecting. Today I drove from Birmingham to Bristol and averaged 45.2mpg travelling between 7* and 9*mph in sixth gear. My mate has a 1.9tdi Golf and says his is usually at least 50mpg. Do I need to bear with it a bit until the car has been run in properly? I saw posts on here before about mpg and bhp rising the more the car is run in the first few months.

Cheers,

BigAde

* Some zeroes may need to be added to these figures

it will take a few thousand miles for the engine to loosen up and give better performance and mpg

the 1.9 TDI (pd100) engine is a bit more frugal, until you get it chipped and 17s put on... I averaged under 50mpg on my way to work this morning, when I'd normally get well over 55 with steels on.

I'm not expecting more than 45 mpg travelling at 80mph on the flat now. :(

The last 3 tank fulls in my standard PD100 have all averaged 50mpg which is a bit below what I'd expect, but I do drive country lanes to work and like to "keep up with the traffic" on my trips from Southampton to Brum so I guess it's not too bad. Will replace the air filter and see if that improves it, and also put in a tank of Shell's finest, rather than Tesco's diesel and see if I can approach Skoda's quoted figures ;)

Interestingly, now the winter weather is lifting, my fuel economy has gone up, even though I'm running the air con continuously in "super chill" mode! :)

Chris

My gf gets about 45mpg in her PD130 Golf even when she's razzing it, hopefully your Fabia should loosen up a bit ! :)

Yep - Dad's brand new 2.0 TDI 140hp gets about 45mpg too, and I can confirm from trying to follow him in the Honda Accord that he's definitely "razzing it" :D

Cheers Guys,

Will monitor it over next few k miles.

I have to say that the MPG so far is not what I was expecting either. I am almost beginning to wonder if it was worth me buying a diesel. About 45 MPG is about the best I seem to get, and I have had it down to 25!!! Admittedly I was driving hard, but I am beginning to think a half decent 2.0 Petrol car like a Clio or Civic would have given it a run for its money in MPG terms.

Cruising at 7*-9* mph usually results in 40 MPG.

I still like the car though...

There have been threads regarding a new updatedsix speed gearbox that's been fitted to recent Fabia VRs' this gearbox gives you negligable performance increases but increases the RPM in topgear.

You'll find that at 70 in 6th your turning over 2200RPM in turn the RPM was considerably less on the early Fabia's VRs' and Mkiv Golfs, this explains the 5mpg difference.

Saying that it's early days, I have just ticked over 1000miles (1 month 4 days), overall MPG has risen and it's hardly used any oil. I'm driving down to Exeter this weekend so I'll let you know what sort of a range I can deliver along with MPG results (note to self, remember digi cam)

Mate, I'm averaging about 29mpg in me Octy vRS, if you can even get 40mpg your deisel engined purchase has paid off ! :D

 Thats very low - mine returns well over 50MPG at those speeds

I wouldn't say it's low. For a new engine still bedding in I kept getting that MPG until about 15,000 miles wet under then it stedily improved and with the new Shell fuel it has improved further. I recently took it on a motorway trip and recieved 59mpg

I've just been to weston-supermare and back form Nottingham this weekend and managed 45mpg. I was expecting a little bit more, but I had a passenger and a very full boot and was cruising between 85 and 90, so I supose it's not that bad. I had a Seat Arosa before with the 100bhp 1.4 petrol VAG unit and that would do well under 40mpg at the same speed even without the luggage and passenger.

Do you think we're expecting too much from these diesels?. Let's face it we didn't really buy them for the fuel economy. I'm sure we are getting much better economy than a sport 172 clio at the same speeds without being much slower.

I've got the 130PD Octavia (same engine) and i normally get 45mpg on the flat cruising at 95mph. Uphill it gets as low as 35mpg. Downhill I had it at 94mpg. I have cruise control, which hopefully should improve the consumption. Either way i've done 350 miles using 5/8s of the tank, So i'm expecting just under 600 miles from the 55 litre tank. This is a combination of motorway cruising and round town driving. Never taken it over 3k rpm though.

edit: hmm 350 mph seems a bit high ;)

I think I did expect too much. No kidding when I say my economy varies between 25-45 MPG, I have on rare occaisions hit 50 but thats like all downhill for a while as soon as you encounter a slight uphill bit its back down again. I can guarantee that 50+ is almost impossible in my car unless you drive like a granny. Maybe I was expecting too much. My commute to work is usually between 35-45 (mostly town driving, some open roads).

350mph using 5/8s of the tank,

oops

not mph, just miles

lol

I easily get 45-50 mpg to and from work over a variety of different roads, and have mnaged over 60mpg once or twice.

Ade,

I've got a 3 week old Furby vRS, and I've done about 1400 miles in it, including 2 long trips to Warwick and Manchester (from near Portsmouth) and got 45/46 mpg on both trips, so I don't think the figures that you are getting are unusual, and I certainly don't hang about it mine. A guy I work with has a tdi130 Golf and he gets 50something mpg from his, BUT, he drives like my Grandad, and has his trip display permanently on the mpg display and varies his driving in order to get max mpg, rather than for how's best to drive. So, don't believe all of the hype. If you want bonkers mpg from the Vdub family then the Lupo / Arosa would have been the better choice. I'd also suggest that once your tyres are run in, it would be worth checking the pressures that they're sent out of the dealers with, as I intend to do on mine, as I've heard that they normally put them out with lowish pressures that will impact the economy. I'd also agree with the consensus on the site to stick with BP or Shell fuel, ideally BP Ultimate. I've gone to the Furby from a Nissan QX 2.0 (avg. 28mpg) and a Volvo 850 2.5 (avg 26mpg) so this car is an absolute joy!

Chaos

I think the length of the journeys and kind of roads used impacts on this a lot.

My route home is 25 miles, first half is town, roundabouts etc and I average 35mpg

The second half is fast A roads and by the time I get home, I have averaged 45-50 mpg for the whole journey

Therefore I must be averaging 60 mpg plus on the A roads

So - the guys that are getting low MPG's - do you do short journeys or mainly town driving, and the guys getting high MPG's - do you do longer journeys on A roads??

My trip computer usually says i get 58mpg avg on way too work... 45 on way home...

average over a tank is 47mpg which is good for over 600miles to a tank

My car's trip indicated 34+ mpg on 270 mile round trip to Yorkshire recently. However the actual mpg based on brim to brim was 30.90 mpg. The only reasonably reliable method of getting accurate mpg figures is to log total fuel and mileage during ownership.

Short Trips, I live barely, 4 miles from my work which consists of town driving, at 30 for about half the way, and a short 70 and 40 mph sections. I also go through 3 very busy junctions where if you miss the traffic lights a 3 minute wait is not uncommon. Yet usually I can average 50mpg on the trip.

My octy 1.8T manages 38mpg average to work and back, in heavy slowish traffic. However on track at the ring I can manage the dizzy heights of 9 MPG, as jon will no dought tell you, when you fill up and the trip computer tells you your range to next fill up is just over 100 miles, you know that you have been driving hard.

Admittedly, my commute to work is normally about 8 miles maximum. The first 2 are in the city center (lights), then the next 4 miles are on relatively slow moving dual carriageway (here is where it tends to go up), the final 2 miles are on NSL roads.
