1971 Octavia Combi update ...

The car is back in the paintshop, as the previous re-paint had micro-blistered.

Fingers crossed that the paint guy will restore his honour!

Looking good,D ! Boleslav visit any danger?

The T613S is very cool, want one !

That looks soooo awesome!!! Shame I missed it

Was it a good outing?

Yeah it was a fab weekend,

I'm sure a Favorit would be regarded as rare / old enough to take part in SALT4.

Have a word with Tatraskoda on here (he's one of the organisers)

As for the T613, that was the Prague Castle based car of the Czech president (blue lights/ sirens /public address) there's only 6 of (71 built) to that spec' in the world, Jay Leno is the only other English speaking owner of one! Unfortunately, it was the only car to fail to complete the weekend, after rear brake problems.

The blue one should be having a trip to Leeds on Sunday (see link in signature) and the red one is getting closer to readiness. Not so sure about a trip to MB in one yet it's a long long way at 50mph

cheers ... Darren

Slovak Premier, actually,D. But before the 1993 separation of the 2 states, so it probably spent its life shunting him between Bratislava and Praha.

In my defence I was in the bar at the time I was told the history.

:woohoo:

Been for a trip out to Leeds (see thread in Yorkshire meets)

in the 1965 saloon, another 100 miles of old Skoda crowd pulling.

However todays big news is ....

The combi passed it's MOT today.

:woohoo:

It's previous MOT was dated 25 August 1981 with 35468 miles

The 1980 MOT shows 33,776 miles

The previous owner did say he simply stopped using the combi after he got a company car.

added more smilies for effect

Great stuff, now just need the weather for it. Dave Mac's here, looking for bits for his ex-DDR Spartak 445, which seems to have all the Spartak-specific exterior bits removed or updated to Octavia-with-rear-fins spec. !

Hope he has a bulging wallet !

Well with apologies to Baddiel, Skinner & the Lghtning seeds (3 Lions remix) .....

We still believe

We still believe

We still believe

It's coming home

It's coming home, it's coming

Combi's coming home

Tears for heroes dressed in grey

No plans for Rally day

Stay in bed, drift away

It could have been all

Skodas in the street

It was nearly complete

It was nearly so sweet

and now I'm singing

Flying Chicken on a shirt

Chrome grille should be gleaming

No more years of hurt

No more need for dreaming

Talk about Combi coming home

And then one night in Royston

We were strong, we had grown

And now I see it's MOT for the road

Gears good as before

Engine eady to roar

and tyres screaming

Flying Chicken on a shirt

Chrome grille should be gleaming

No more years of hurt

No more need for dreaming

It's coming home, it's coming home,

Combi's coming home ....

Well Sunday night ...

I couldn't sleep as there were big plans for Monday ....

Drop modern octy at main dealer for service (booked ages ago)

pick up courtesy car (Fabia mkII combi, very nice actually).

Drive to Waynes (Halfpint2), then onwards to Peterborough DVLA office,

to get historic category tax disc.

Drive to Royston to Daverapids garage.

Pick up combi.

Drive back in convoy, Wayne driving the Octavia with me following in the Fabia.

to be continued .....

Congratulations Darren on the combi passing :balloons :balloons

I can just imagine the humongous smile beaming across your cheeky chops

Wayne,

Nice to see you can log in again.

Folks, this guy is a legend, as he kindly took Monday off work to drive the Combi back for me. He's even more of a legend as ....

We set off in convoy from Royston, a few miles out of town, a dribble of water appears from the heater matrix. (This has happened onthe blue one too, and I'd already had my spare matrix overhauled)

Call into filling station for fuel & top up some bottles with water, just in case, as the heater shut off valve is seized open. No other obvious maladies.....

However, just a few miles further (& exactly 10 from Royston), Wayne pulls over in a cloud of steam. The head gasket & water pump have both gone. Time to call the tow truck.

Here's the "good" bit, Wayne then waits with the combi for the truck.

Meanwhile, I drive off & leave him!!!

M'lud, the case for the defence is ....

I had to get back to the dealer to handover the courtesy car and collect my modern car from service. Normally a quick phone call to re-arrange for the next morning, would be ok. However as I was flying out of Stansted at 0720 on Tuesday, that wasn't an option.

However, I did then go to area51 to meet the truck & give Wayne a lift home!

So anyway, a big thank you is due to Wayne, top man

Did you take any pix?

cheers ... Darren

Been down to Area51 today with Dave W (daveyvrs) (big thanks for his techie help as ever).

Combi engine has been run up to temperature to check the water system.

System held water with the heater blanked off.

Thermostat & water pump both to be replaced.

Sadly spare water pump totally seized too.

Radiator off and going for re-core rather waiting for it to fail,

as it's obviously 38 years old now.

Will replace heater matrix with overhauled spare and renew the hoses & clips too.

Will also renew head gasket as a precautionary measure.

Spent another couple of hours de-greasing the engine after Dave had left,

although it still needs a lot more .

Old cars, you've got to love them!

nice cars darren , never seen them before i dont think , nice change from mgs and moggie moaners

Thanks Pete

Yeah, there's not many of them about.

last figures for uk (T&T road legal) 1957-1971

saloons = 2

combis = 5

cabrios = 5

Unless any one knows of more.

I do keep in touch with the SOCGB guy that's trying to keep a register of these.

Both of mine were new to his list when I acquired them.

As both had been stored by their original owners for 10 & 25 years respectively.

So without venturing onto the roads or changing hands they were off the club's radar.

cheers ... Darren
