I have a really bad stutter, well I think its a stutter it only happens at 18-20k revs. Thought my turbo was just lagging under acceleration

Want to try this, has anyone had a full fix from this or just seen an improvement? And you dont recommend it going to the dealers?

As MODVRS said the dealers can only fit the 14.5mm gasket, this appears to reduce the stutter and cures it on some cars. Probably worth getting your dealer to fit this and see how you get on. If it doesn't cure it completed go for a smaller hole, think I drilled mine out to 10.5mm as I had problems with the CEL light.

Fix it fully? Yeh, why not :D

HI

Have a 2006 vrs with 6k miles and has the stutter more so at 3000 rev,s have done the 9 mm gasket slight drill out to 10mm at point 11 in dia. has cure problem slighty but still there on high rev,s Has anyone change both gaskets on 6 and 11 on dia, or has anyone a fix for mine car, found the job a piece of pie if done on a pit or ramp underneath.HELP

This problem is only at low revs. a stutter at higher revs is a different problem. Don't know what though. Sorry.

You say that the dealers will not fit a 9mm diameter hole, has anyone taken one with them and asked politely if he would fit that instead lol...?

Just rang my dealer (Thomson and Potter in Perthshire) and they said it would cost me

^ find a new dealer, or speak to Skoda CS.

Sometimes its better to play dumb, rather than tell someone the solution :)

If the problem gets worse I will prob go down the DIY 9mm route, the service is normally good with this dealer but is it a skoda "fact" that this should be covered under warranty as I want to say something to them about not wanting to be fobbed off?

A complete lie I'm afraid! Apart from the common fault bit, of course.

Going back to this thread I found this post. MODVRS, you are not right! :) There is a software fix and my car is running it. I am quite happy with it. It cured the stutter. Here it is again: Karaibrahim's software stutter fix. :D It even reduced the soot coming off the car.

Which UK dealer would you recommend us to visit to get this then?

Is this you nibbling at me, because I said you're wrong?

In my case the dealer hasn't heard of the hardware modification and the gaskets aren't available. Are you offering me to go to the UK to get my car fixed?

I was just offering a fairly easy software way to fix the stutter. In my point of view this is a lot easier than drilling a 9mm gasket to 10mm and fitting it.

I think you'll find what MODVRS is saying is that Skoda UK don't / won't deal with this with a software fix....... We , unlike yourself, cannot walk into our local dealer with this issue and get the software update. Over here it seems the situation is the opposite of your where by the delaers have no knowledge of the software fix but have the official info regarding the gasket etc..... Obviously Skoda Bulgaria are dealing with the issue differently to Skoda UK.

Cheers

Dave.

I got my vRS last saturday, and noticed what I thought of as "lag" around this rev range, I'm not massively technical, and it's due for a service in March. It's under warranty until sept, so I'm considering the Skoda fix (14.5mm), I'd rather not go for the 9mm, at least not at this point.

I've trawled through a lot of posts, but what I want to know is; is there any detriment to getting the Skoda fix under warranty? ie: Will I lose economy, performance, etc?

The dealer replaced my gasket under warranty on my vRS Limited.

I own an Octavia mk2 TDI 4x4 with the BXE Engine, as previously mentioned in this thread my engine is also effected by the dreaded stutter bewteen 1800 and 2500 rpm along with poor starting, by this I mean that the engine fires straight away but it seemed to be misfiring for a couple of seconds and then it clears and runs normally with any further starts having no issues.

These issues are very well discussed on BRISKODA and clearly detail some of the success that others have had, well, I started with replacing the Glow Plugs as the initial cold starting problem I initially thought was linked with a Glow Plug(s) failing.... these were all replaced and basically did not alter anything, still the deared misfire was apparent at first start up.

Over the festive period I thought that I would monitor this staring issue to see whether it was more apparent at certain temperatures or not, we had some quite cold weather over this time the lowest temperature was minus 18 degrees C!!, yes the stutter was still apparent and did not realy alter much with varing temperatures and humidity.

I trawled further around the forum and then tried the MAF Sensor test, believing this as a possible cause, I replaced the MAF Sensor and for a couple of days things seemd OK with No stuttering or bad cold starting but after a couple of days, things returned back as before.

This problem was really begining to get on my nerves, so, again trawling the forum, I noted that many were suggesting the EGR causing problems on some of the later VRS Fabia's, I have previously owned 2 VRS Fabia's and both were absolutely fine.

With the stuttering etc.. not getting any better, I decided to try the 9mm Gasket as mentioned in the forum, it is reported that some have had success with this fix, with the help of one of the local Skoda Dealers, they got me one within a couple of days and this was duly fitted, it improved things slightly but the stuttering and cold staring were still quite apparent.

I carried out various VAGCOM tests and managed to monitor what was going on with the EGR Valve whilst the stuttering was occuring and recorded the Graphical data, basically as many have already said the EGR appears to be recirculating a considerable amount of Gas and by doing this is casuing issues with combustion.

Out of interest I decided to make my own EGR Gaskets out of 1050 grade aluminium sheet (.5mm Thick), I tried various size holes inthe gaskets in order to establish at what point I could cure the stuttering and cold starting problem.... following a number of gaskets and days testing, I arrived at 3mm, on my engine this was the size which cured both problems but then the Management light came on because of the reduced gas flow to the EGR Valve. I used VAGCOM to reset the light and removed the home made gasket.

I was satisfied that the dreaded EGR Valve was the problem and nothing else more sinister, as has been mentioned by others it was getting to the point where I was looking for another car, I was at the end of my thether with the stuttering etc..., out of interest and owing to others mentioning the remap path, I contacted a company in the Cheshire who specialise in VAG remaps... this was the end of the line, if this did not work then I had decided the car was going!!

I visited the company and following discussing the problems I was experiencing, I had the car remapped, not with anything stupid just a standard remap but I requested that the EGR was disabled which it was...., following a week or so of various use of the car, I can honestly say that the car is now as it should be, the stuttering and cold starting issues have gone and the MPG is now better..it has gone from an annoying wheezing stuttering thing to a usable car with moderate performance and it seems to be CURED!!!!.

I know the above is a bit long winded but I thought that I would share my experiences with others, I am very pleased with the car once again and I am definately keeping the car, I think it's now how it should be!!

so you got the 3mm gasket back in now?

good write up btw.

Sorry for the time it has taken to respond, I've been quite busy recently.

I removed the 3mm Home made Gasket and replaced it with the 9mm and the 9mm is still fitted.

The car has been run for a number of weeks now and to be perfectly honest, I was very open minded as to whether the remap would alter anything with regard to the stutter.

The car is much more responsive in particular in 3rd and 4th gear, the mpg in slightly better (around 2-3 mpg) and no matter how hard I have tried to get it to stutter, I have to say that it has completely gone!!

I think I mentioned in my earlier post that I was also experiencing something similar to a misfire when first starting from cold, this has also gone, so all in all I can honestly say that my problems have been resovled.

When I was battling to resolve the dreaded misfire, a number people (not on this forum might I add!!) said that in remapping and disabling the EGR Valve, this would cause problems for the MOT because of the Black Smoke problems associated with doing both, well, albeit a little more exhaust smoke is generated, it is certainly not black and under normal driving conditions, I have to say I have not noticed any more smoke than before the mods.

I am a self professed pain with cars and like many, I want them to be right, my car is out of warranty now and I do look after it myself i.e servicing etc..., it is on variable servicing but a regular oil and filter change helps a great deal, I personally use Mobil 1 (VW507 00) and change the oil and filter at 5000 mile intervals, I know some will say that I am throwing away relatively good oil and I am inclined to agree but from my engineering days, I am a great believer in that a Good Quality Clean Engine Oil prolongs the life engine and certainly with the VW PD Engine with the Mechanical Pressures involved at the top end (Also the cost when they fail!!).

I am very happy with how it is performing/behaving now and I hope that other experiencing this totally unacceptable stutter resolve the problem in a way that suits them.

It is a pitty that VAG have had to bow to the pressure EU and have effectively turned a powerfull fire breathing PD engine into a stuttering problematic lump and no doubt they have had people who have once been great supporters of the brands walk away because of the problems experienced.

I sincerely hope that people have the determination and resolve to deal with these issues, I know at times with my car, I really did think it was something more sinister, I can honestly say that if it had not been for this forum and the wealth of knowledge and experience associated with it, I would no longer own a SKODA, however, I am proud to say that I still a SKODA owner and will be for many years to come!!
