Couple of questions regarding boost gauges.

Featured Replies

Hi people,

I bought a TIM 2 bar boost gauge of fleabay last week and got round to fitting it this evening. Now never having a boost gauge before i now have a few questions regarding how it should work.

Is it normal for the boost gauge to "chatter" when showing boost? its quite noisy?

Is it normal on a tdi for the boost gauge to "flicker" at idle?

When i give it full throttle the gauge jumps to just under 2 bar  at low rpms the levels off at around 1.7 bar and remains constant all the way up to 4.+k rpm. Does this sound normal for a fabia vrs?

cheers in advance john

Does your boost gauge show Vac as Well as Boost?? As PD engines don't produce an Vac due to the VNT turbo! It maybe you have the wrong gauge

I thought that all boost gauges had a negative scale? i understand why the boost gauge doesnt read into negative as diesels wont ever produce negative boost, having no throttle to close off the intake.

You can get boost gauges 0bar - 2 bar, 0 bar - 3 bar etc. So, no, they don't all give a vacuum reading.

Try putting a small carb style fuel filter somewhere inline with your boost gauge tubing, you may get a slightly slower gauge response but should stop the chatter.

Who mapped your car? Looks like a very aggressive map to me spiking up to 2bar or maybe more, also I would have thought boost should start tapering off a bit after 3.5k rpm to preserve the turbo a bit.

The only 3bar mechanical gauge I could find was a VDO, which is nice, I was tempted by a SPA dual boost/EGT gauge but was put off by the

I have the below gauge. It doesn't make any noise and on idle the needle reads a rock steady 0. It shouldn't wobble unless the gauge isn't mounted right, or the internals are being shaken by something? Where have you plumbed in the feed pipe to? Edit: Mine also goes to 2 bar quite fast, but it is not a spike. It goes there, and stays there. :D

Ummm, can't remember where I got the gauge. :o

Oh yeah, Allards got it to me when I was doing the conversion, and I got a second one off Ebay, which I actually still have, and is avaliable for

oooo nice, i like the idea of a boost gauge but i dont want to start putting holes in my dash.

i think i'll need to find another mounting point.

its not the gauge itself which is shaking its just the needle, i plummed it into the top plastic intercooler pipe before it enters the egr. but will eventually get round to tapping a thread in the inlet manifold.

I have seen the VDO 0-3bar ones on ebay so might just invest in one of those. The needle shoots up to 2bar quite quickley and holds for a few seconds then slowley drops down to a steady 1.6-1.7 bar right up the the redline.

The map is just a genric map but it doesnt feel too harsh at low rpms and pulls well right up the redline. I am still on the standard orginal clutch and there is no slippage at all.

I've just had a stupid idea! Well, maybe....

Where the vents are located, in the top of the dash, it should prove possible to make a hood thing to locate in that hole, with the vents at the bottom (now facing directly forwards) and some gauges in the top.... Or vice versa. Would need to be a good job to look right though....
