Bad Idle - Barkers Grimsby had for nearly three weeks and nothing improved

Featured Replies

I have this too but have lived with it, 06 BLT coded engine. When stationary the car has lumpy idle. Aircon or raising the revs just iron it out a tad but it is still there, has been there from around 1500 miles with or without modified EGR gasket fitted.

Mine i would describe as a shudder, it rocks backwards and forwards as opposed to sideways. Cannot face going to the dealers again just want to get on and drive the car. Hope you find a resolution.

Update:

Now 6 weeks and Skoda Customers Services have just phoned to say their latest efforts did not work. They will try other ideas. The email I sent a while back cataloguing what has happened and my expectations apparently did not get to them, so have sent it again! I will mail a copy to them.

No replies necessary, thanks.

I have a 56 vRS with the same shuddering problem at idle. At its worst it's like sitting in a shopping trolley while being pushed down a cobbled street! I've noticed mine only does it when the engine is fully warmed up and as oher have said either raising the revs with the gas peddle or via the A/C irons it out a bit.

Could it be engine mount related? I say this because when mine starts vibrating like this the engine rocks like crazy when i've looked under the bonnet.

Fab vrs,

something I forgot to mention is that a couple of weeks ago they did adjust the engine mounts because they found that there was a vibration problem with a different Fabia model (1.4?). Thanks for the suggestion.

I reckon that the rocking engine is the effect not the cause - if it was not stuttering the engine would be relatively smooth or stationary on its mounts.

7 Weeks ....

Skoda CS are in regular contact with me and Barkers and have been for the last few weeks. I have written two letters to the MD of Skoda which were passed on to CS.

Grimsby Skoda have just told me there is an identical car (faults etc) in Scotland which was going to be used as the guinea pig car but that has just been sold to another dealer. I asked if the original owner had rejected it but that was not known. So mine is the new guinea pig and they are fitting new injectors (which were for the 'Scottish' car) early next week and reverting the EGR back to the old setting with a new gasket.

Skoda CS are going to pay for a better, larger loan car without all the advertising on it. I have asked for compensation but of course they wont commit themselves until the outcome.

If I were to try and reject and was successful, I don't know which car I would want and I wonder who will get the 'identical car in Scotland'?

  • Author

Just been on the phone and gleaned (they wont say outright) that the owner did reject the car and the dealer now own it - somewhere in Scotland. I think I will phone a few garages and enquire whether they have an SE and investigate.

EDIT: phoned all the garages (except Glasgow North - no person available yet) in Scotland that are on the Skoda website selling new cars and no-one seems to have it.

Another week ...

New injectors didn't work and the impression I got is that the new gasket (the 'old' type) didn't help.

Skoda are now paying the garage for a loan car so I have a much better car i.e. not one of the garage's 'advertisement' courtesy cars, but a new better hire car.

No replies necessary, this is just an update as some members requested.

Yet another week (nearly). Seasons come and go, kids have grown up, I think my last car was a Hillman Avenger....

Anyway, as I said on a different thread there are now about four cars with the problem and Skoda wanted one to examine at their base. Customer Services (CS) pleaded for it to be mine, but with their wisdom they have chosen another. Skoda usually only offer one 'goodwill gesture' which is usually a hire car (others are free service or a meal for two) which I now have. I said I should have kept the Barker's courtesy car so I would have been in line for a different goodwill gesture. They said because of the time my car has been off the road they may consider that two gestures could be applicable BUT if it is a characteristic of the car (i.e. they can't mend it) then there will be no gesture.

A new man in charge at Barkers, Jamie Taylor, has been very cooperative and shows genuine concern and wants to treat me well. I don't want to say anything more at this time about Mr Taylor as Skoda may read this post. Skoda have asked for all details to be sent to them of what has been attempted so far. You would have thought they would have kept a detailed record as Barkers have only done what they have been told to do.

I've now got mine booked in for the same problem and a couple of other issues and it should be in a week today. The dealer didn't seem concerned when I told him and said it should be easy to rectify. With this thread in mind I wonder how easy it's going to be in reality!!

I'll keep you updated as and when I hear anything.

Some have had vibrations cured easily and quickly. I hope your car will be one of those and not add to the four cars that are proving difficult to rectify.

Weekly update for those who asked me to.

Skoda UK short of staff this week so not much has happened. Trying new ideas next week. Many will think we should have rejected. We have looked at other cars but my wife just wants her vrs back as she has found nothing (diesel) else she likes. I hope Skoda will take this loyality into consideration - We've had/have 3 vrs's and an Octavia 2.0Pdi Estate (excellent). In the past an Estelle and a Favorit. Time will tell.

Apparently my case with the Customer Services' lady is one of her longest but not the longest - yet!

No replies necessary.

I got mine back this morning after having it in for the rough idle issue along with a list of other things. It has come away with most of the things not done and is booked in for two weeks (!!!) from the 15th onwards. They think the idle issue is from an out of balance fly wheel and they think that is also causing the knock from the front nearside. I also had it in for the stutter fix but they said it doesn't work and that Skoda have told them they're still working on it. Having read the Skoda opinion of the stutter being a chracteristic i'm slightly put out. I'll call customer services and see the latest Skoda position on the problems before heading back to the dealers fully briefed.

For those that are interested the dealer is Martin Beaver in York (formerly F R Pulleyn)

****** to that its only a car i'd have taken my money back a long time ago. This is no way to carry on. Had this been another product say a

Fab vrs. I don't think my problem is the fly wheel as I have mentioned it quite a few times to both the garage and Skoda. I hope yours is something easy. The lady at CS who is dealing with my problem is called Jenny. If you get through or ask for her, she is up to date on what the technicians are up to with mine and another person's car Skoda have at their base for investigating.

vrswhite. The thing is we expected the idle problem to be quickly and easily fixed. Also, they said run it in for 1000 miles (approx. a month). Then it went in for its first 'fix' and by then the garage and most other garages had no more SEs. If the vrs had still been in production we would definitely have got a new swap. Other alternatives with the power, frugality, size etc of a vrs are rare. Normally we are very finicky when we have bought something faulty and have fought for our rights.

Take your car to Dennis Horton in Lincoln fantastic service & help, they will get to bottom of problem. Voted best Skoda dealer last year & have been a Skoda main agent for donkey's years.

Took me 6 weeks to get my fabia vrs as hortons lost the log book and were unable to tax the car. Took me a trip to the OFT and the threat of legal action to get it sorted.

Weekly update (or should that be weakly update?).

Skoda still working on a car at their base. Been told there are now 6 cars with this fault and mine was the first. Wife wanted it back to drive until they find a cure but this had to be passed by Skoda's technicians - which it was but they could not guarantee it causing more problems. We decided it was better if we didn't collect drive it until this debacle is over as it may weaken our case for any future Skoda goodwill gesture. Barkers have valeted the car thinking we were picking it up. I was getting worried about the discs getting pitted with the car standing outside. Sean said he would clean them if necessary and the car will now be kept inside.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well the list of six has now grown to seven as mine has been with the local dealer for the last two weeks and they have just called to say they can't find a cure. They've said it's got better but is not fixed and are in communication with Skoda directly. For now i'm using their Octavia loan vehicle.

Does anyone know what we're entitled to if they can't fix it? I can't see them giving us new vehicles and expect it will be put down to another characteristic like the stupid stutter.

I haven't given an update for the last two weeks as there is nothing to report and did not want people wasting their time reading teh thread. It is about 3 MONTHS they have had my car now.

Fab vrs, is the Octavia supplied and paid for by your garage or are Skoda (UK) paying for it?

I made the mistake of letting Skoda pay for a hire car after a few weeks (because the garage supplied a pitiful car) and Skoda told me that one of their 'goodwill gestures' for having my car off the road is them paying for a loan car. So that means I have 'wasted' a goodwill gesture - but am still hopeful for more. They can't give a new vehicle (as you say) because they aren't made anymore, otherwise I would have rejected and got one. Skoda told me it may be a 'characteristic', I said I would not accept that and I hope other people do not accept that 'get out'. As the other cars (which have been reported to Skoda) developed the problem and there are not many of them, surely it is not a 'built in characteristic'.

I'm sorry but I haven't been able to read the whole thread.

What outcome are you guys hoping for?

quite welcolme to compare your se with mine Prasg I guess where quite close

  • Author

Sotonjoe,

You ask what outcome? Well the car back working and some goodwill gestureS from Skoda (UK) I don't want to stipulate anything because 'they' may read some threads on here.

Nud748,

Thanks for the offer. My car is at the Grimsby garage and I am about 40 miles south of Grimsby. We have had two other vrs cars and my son has one of those at the moment. Both were/are fine at idle. When I get mine back and if it is still not very good, I would like to take you up on your offer, thank you. I take it your car is satisfactory at idle (?)

Yes ours is fine - just pm me and will meet im near brigg no prob hope you have it sorted soon

cheers Andy

Not read the whole thread, sorry, most likely this has already been said.

New a chap with the 2.0 audi TDI with a similar issue. The dealerafter much rangling the replaced the flywheel. (That was thier diagnosis of the issue and audi's) It did not cure the issue.

After some time they upped the idle speed from 700rpm to 900 rpm, which got rid of the issue. I have a Fabia VRs and it does have a very smal stutter on idle very occaisionally, which I think is similar to the audi once sorted it also idles at about 900rpm.

Hope you get things resolved I know the pain of dealing with warranty issues, even without the hassle you are having.
