remapping for economy

Featured Replies

I'm in the market to purchase a Skoda octavia 1.9 or 2.0 TDI.

I'm really after getting the most MPG out of the car, are there any companies that do remaps that increase the fuel economy (Fuel economy is my main objective as long as I do not loose performance). If I gain performance as well then that would be great. A friend told me that you can get 3 types of remaps:

1. Lots of MPG improvements but only slight performance improvements

2. Lots of performance improvements but slight MPG improvements

3. A balance which sees a small improvement to both

Obviously MPG depends on how it is driven. However, I'm talking about driving it with a medium weighted foot.

Also, are there any one click boxes that allow toggling between a remap and a standard map? I'm after this so there is no visible signs of a remap at all. Thanks in advance

One that does 2, but has a side effect of 1 is good. ;)

I think REVO do a switchable map system, but not too sure. Also, why bother? ;) You'll never be out of performance mode anyway, especially if the economy is better. :D

The best of both is one that CAN give the performance, but when you use the throttle in a sensible manner, still gives sensible (or even improved) fuel economy.

My Superchips map seemed to do just that, and I'm quite convinced a lot of the maps out there do :)

Remap for Economy? A what cost and how much would you save?

Typical remap -

That's a very fair point. That said in that case I would have broken even already :P as I've done 70k in mine hehe ;)

It is an extremely valid point you're making though, plus another one to add, is the additional insurance cost would be a factor to add, which would probably negate most of the potential savings :)

I'm regularly getting the 55-60 mpg out of my 1.9TDI - I drive 60 miles to work and 60 miles back again from near MK to Cambridge. It's not all 'motorway' miles as around 35 miles are 'single carriageway' type roads.

Working that out - if I could get 5-10 mpg better then that would be paid back (for me) in about 1.5 years after which I'd be 'quids in'.

so now, I guess to the original question - who does an mpg remap?!

I do 800 miles a week, approx 25% non motorway from Colchester to Canary Wharf via Stanstead M11. My "London" car is a Leon 1.9TDi 150 that is Revo'd and I don't take it easy - my objective is to get to work on time and to get away from there as fast as traffic allows!

My average consumption is 49.8MPG on the long range average reading on the car which is confirmed at the pumps. Thats also with the climate on all of the time too! With the remap off, I get an extra 1 to 2 MPG on average over the same 800 miles. I'd rather enjoy the remap'd car than save that 1 or 2 MPG when I spend so much time driving.

Say the 20,000 is per annum; it will therefore take you 2.34 years to break even on the cost of the remap.

And that's excluding costs like insurance hikes, invalidation of warranty and additional wear and tear on engine components!

I must admit that my 2L TDI and revo'd gives me approx 43mpg only(that is the average of the last 7000 miles or so). I do an 18 mile round trip to work half urban/half dual carriageway, plus occasional long journeys. Must be the way I drive!
