It's a writeoff :(

Right - got the info, I can buy it back and probably will based on what I can take off and sell on again. Gonna need to pay off remaining finance, more than likely, and find a safe place for the vehicle to be stored at no cost or very low cost whilst this is taking place. Real problem is not being in the UK :(

What bits you selling?

  • Author

It all depends. For now I am working at arranging storage at a mate nearby, won't post details just yet.

That will mean no storage charges at the recovery/repair place whilst I'm not in the UK. I will then get input from some of our esteemed technical members to see what's next.

I've got a few bits I may be selling but will post about that in a couple of weeks, I can't do anything until I'm in the UK really, in September

Good to hear you can buy it and can store it somewhere.

With all the bits you have on that car, it really is a no-brainer to get it back. Worth way more to you and Briskoda, than it is to some random scrappie. :)

Offer of help is there. ;)

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

If you are reclaiming it and looking to make some dosh, please can I have first dibs on the pedal covers (and wheels if they're not knackered)?

For sure - with all your many mates on Brisk - you can get it sorted and back on the road again....

Good Luck!

Bas

i've already dibbed the steering wheel if its not getting fixed :D

Charge em double, WW :D

 - well once it's recovered it will first need to be checked over to see if indeed it can be repaired at sensible cost + made safe.

The problem is I STILL dont know about the reason it failed to brake.. Which is actually annoying the hell out of me as that's the decision on whether to scrap or not eventually...

IF it gets scrapped then it will be stripped out a fair amount ;) - if not, it will come down to a combination of helping hands, a dash of luck (it's time, I know it is) and hoping I can get it in a safe state at least.

A difficulty you will find is that even if you do manage to repair it and make it safe, it will still be recorded on police/insurance files as a Category C, which will be picked up on HPI checks. This means that if you decide to sell the car at a future date, no sensible buyer will go near it, no matter how well the repairs have been done, and dealers would be unlikely to accept it in part-ex.

No gonna want to sell it anyway - I do too many miles (thus the depreciation), so that's not really a factor to me.

That said, plenty of work to be done before it can be used...

If it was me, WW, I'd say goodbye.

I know it's a shame, you've done so much.

Right now, as I see it, you don't need the stress, the headaches.

You'll end up being messed around something cruel (inadvertently, but human nature and circumstance intervening) by people who want bits, turning up late or not at all ....... and on and on.

At the end of the day, if you do a rebuild, you'll have some potentially dodgy parts and, as Imperator says, no one would want to touch it.

Wash your hands of it - get a settlement figure, go get another car. At least then you'll be on the road sooner etc etc.

I'll be on the road before I even see the car...

If I just take the settlement money I loose a fortune. If I take the car back and strip it, I would easily, and I mean easily, recover the salvage amount.

That is not to say I wouldnt consider buying another shell ;)

WW Scrapyard Inc :D

OK, didn't know how the finances stacked up.

Best of luck whatever you do

That Allard Fabia looked interesting - and he'd just had all top end done.

Gutted to hear about your motor mate. :(

Has the thought of transplanting the guts into something else VAG crossed your mind at all?

There are a few options available - it all depends on what actually has to be fixed, vs what the quote implies has to be fixed.

It's pretty obvious to me that the 9k quote (for the repairs) is inflated at the very least. Also I can repair the seats and turn off side airbags, plus put the original vRS alloys with tyres (still have those) back on.

The concerns mainly are:

1. What went wrong to start with - as I cant risk that happening again.

2. How bad is the suspension damage, i.e. is it very bad or just a few small things that can be replaced by 2nd hand items?

3. Is the shell actually bent or not - if so, how much to put that right professionally.

I need a functioning, safe vehicle. So brake related issue wants sorting, and that will be investigated for definite.

Hopefully things can be done on the cheap for now, but will see...

Had a quick browse on interweb, this is the first one I found, you probably have most of the bits to fix it & will still have a pile of bits to sell to help fund things. Remember even if your shell is bent people will still buy sections of it to fix other cars so everything has a value

Damaged Repairable, Autosalvage SKODA FABIA

If you can find a water damaged one even better, you just need to trawl the net looking for Salvage cars, If you have little experience DONT BUY a cat C

Before you do anything get a quote from a good small independent bodyshop to fix your car, you might be suprised how cheap it is BUT MAKE SURE they have a full jig !!!

Our Octavia was totalled, Insurance paid out 6500, bought it back for 1600, cost 2000 to fix using s/hand parts & that was all done by a bodyshop at true cost & included taking all the other little dinks out at the same time, s/hand parts can be found really cheaply if you look hard enough, IE complete dash + both airbags,

Thanks for that :)

Well hopefully by pulling together a few things and a bit of luck things will be within my budget - I cant spend money on the car other than what is left after paying off the finance + buying the vehicle back, but it might well be possible to do this.

There is a reputable car repair place right nearby where I live, but will check with a few others ;)

I think I said this before but when you know the parts needed give Skospares a ring & they can give you a budget even if they dont have the parts

I know it's a bummer, but if you got out damage free that's great, a car can always be repaired or replaced you can't

  • Author

Absolutely :) skoda john. Annoyingly by trying to avoid the hard impact on the other vehicle as much as I did, I hit the central reservation, causing probably at least half of the damage sustained. Still, I don't regret doing that, as instinctively I probably avoided pushing their car under a lorry. Not only better for the car I hit, but I could have had a death or heavy injury on my conscience, be it my 'fault' or not, I am very grateful I don't have to live with that :)

As now confirmed, Bengie has very kindly offered to store my car for the time being, and that means I can get stuff moving. Mr Lummox will also have a good look at it, see what the situation is, and then when I get back, we'll see what's next :)

Thanks to all in this thread for your support/suggestions, and I'll be flogging some bits from my spares collection regardless at some stage in the near future, will spot those in the for sale section probably next month :)

That's very true.

I'm very thankfull I walked away from my recent accident & a million times more thankfull there wasn't a passenger in the front seat!!

Shouldn't you create a Vulture list, and Assign some sort of pecking order else they'll be circling endlessly and causing no end of trouble :D

  • Author

Nope :P - no point making a list, the spare will just go on the for sale section when I'm back in the UK ;)

bit of a ****ter that it's a write off, but seeing as it was either that or give the car in front a real battering, a written of car seems to be the lesser of two evils (especially as you say it could have ended up with them under a lorry  )

so that'll be two broken skodas sat in front of the house  :P
