Front parking sensors

Featured Replies

Have just had the dealer fit the front parking sensors on a 07 Elegance. Suspect they are not the Skoda ones, and they struggled for over a day to get them to work, something about not knowing how to fit the various blue connectors!

They work OK, with a neat little illuminated 'off' switch fitted in the dash by the driver's knee. However, the actual sensors are black, and they fitted them in the bumper, not the black plastic insert! It looks as though careful application of touch up paint will give a reasonable finish, but be warned, if you have this job done, you need to check if colour coding is available. Better still, have them as an option when you order the car. :finger:

OUCH !! I'm afraid if that was my car then they would be paying for a new bumper ..... Is it a Skoda Dealer ? I think it's fair to expect that they are going to be fitting proper Skoda products.

Sounds like they are cost cutting to me ?

It is a Skoda dealer, but my suspicions were aroused by the leaflets on the service counter detailing the fitting of parking sensor products by another manufacturer. Hence, I guess, the many phone calls they made to the manufacturer to sort out the wiring problems. Strangely, the cost was the same as you would pay for factory fitted items. I understand your point about a new bumper, but as I had not specified where the sensors were to be fitted, and the fact that I prefer the car to have the original paint work rather than effectively a re-spray, I'll stick with it. Makes you wonder about these dealers though. I've had Toyota's from new since 1991 until now. You can't fault the dealers, I think Skoda has a little way to go to match them.

This is why I didn't get them fitted afterwards. I wish I had ordered them at the time I ordered the car last year.

Anyway, this is from teh official site:

Škoda Accessories

:fence3d: When did people start needing these things? can't anyone park anymore?

If getting them fitted at the time you buy the car, I think it's worth it, whether you really need them or not, because even the slightest mishap would most probably cost a similar amount to getting them fitted.

The amount of times I see people trying to park cars and hit others in teh process, they should be standard, even on teh smallest cars and especially ones driven by women ;)

lol,

The genuine kit is an aftermarket one anyway made by Cobra.

Thanks for all the comments. I had them fitted because my drive is so narrow. Because they also detect objects to the side, it makes driving down the drive between my house and the neighbours, in the dark especially, so much easier. Why do manufacturers insist on making every new model wider than the last!!!

They would have been perfect for me and my garage. Going from a Fabia estate to an Octavia last year meant there was little room for error, something I have found out to my cost.

Thanks, Lummox, for the photo: those look suspiciously like Audi Rings............

LOL, the rings are the masking rings that you put on the sensors when painting the them so the paint doesnt go onto the sensing part of the sensor if that makes sense. The picture is taken from the link from the Skoda website.

It not connect to CAN and work like usual independent device - without indication on STREAm radio

Neither front nor rear retro fit sensors work with the CAN system or radio.

Not. Original kit BEA 609 001 (rear sensors) connect to CAN and seems like factory fitted system. But there are no same kit for front.

Ahh my error then, looks like Skoda have finally come out with the propper kit then. Up until a little while ago they were issuing the same kit as the one listed above for the front for the rear. Be interested to know how that kit installs then to work with the headunit.

This is what Skoda show you as the after market rear sensors

Which is what i thought, the Cobra kit.

I dont think the kit shown by our Russian friend is available/suitable for the uk.

Yes, it has always seemed to me to be a case of you get a different product if you order at the time of placing a new car compared to buying after you receive said car.

I always turn the damn things off when driving a car with parking sensors. What an annoying device! Thank god my own car does not have any! I know exactly where every edge of my car is and I dont need a stupid beep beep beep to tell me that I've hit something when there is still another meter to go before I actually do hit it! Other thing with them is they make horrible rust inducing holes in bodywork or silly dots in plastic bumpers, how unattractive.

Bah humbug

Factory fit front sensors are speed dependant. They stop operating at speeds above about 7 mph. IIRC there is no switch to turn them off and a display shows up on the radio panel.

Every factory front sensors I have seen have a switch to turn them off should you want to.

Whilst in CZ this week I met with the guy I bought some parts from and amoung the huge amount of goodies he has he showed me Octy II front sensors - the ones that would have been fitted at the factory.

It seems that it is possible to fit these if you have the rear ones already fitted by mounting the sensors and changing the control unit located in the boot from a two connector one to a three connector one. You need to run the wire from the front of the car to the boot mounted controller and to the dash for the OEM switch Lummox mentions.
