One of life's mysteries

Featured Replies

Well I've just been and filled the car up with diesel and one of life's little mysteries has cropped up again. There is diesel all over the handle of the fuel pump filler nozzle?! I checked both the petrol nozzles and they were nice and dry.

So does anyone have any idea how this happens? It doesn't seem to be an isolated incident, but I've never managed to do it

Chris

My guess would be splashback from when the fuel in the tank is nearing full - if this happens on the petrol ones it evaporates off, on the diesel it just sits on the pump handle.

Yet another reason why petrol is better... ;)

Rob.

Splashback is always messy. At least you diddnt get it on your trousers.

But isn't that what the collar on the handle is there to prevent?

Thats to stop your hand flying off.

oh no, hold on, thats a different joke ;):D

petrol is more volatile and evaporates, diesel is basically oil so it stays on the handle for agggeeeeeess

You can always burn it off with a lighter or a small blow torch...........on second thoughts don't try this just in case Jason reads this. :P

WHat I don't understand is how, or why, anyone manages to leave the pistol assembly with a complete nozzle-full of fuel in the first place?

I agree this is not uncommon.

So Andy's Handy Hint of the Day......

Keep a plastic glove (that you get free at some petrol stations) inside the fuel filler flap.

 wonder if clinton got any splashback? ;)

Lorry drivers tend to use gloves with which to fill up, these gloves do get diesel on and thus, it spreads about.

Also when I fill up the reserve, it splashes the pump a bit.

So it's all these inconsiderate Fabia drivers when they do their vent trick? I might have known :P:rofl:

it will still sit there on the handle as the diesel wont light

we test for fuel contamination at work , one of the best ways to test for petrol in diesel is to put a light to it , if it ignites we know the customer has been a Kn0b and filled up with petrol , if its only diesel in the tank it just wont ignite

:iagree: - It's not big, and it's not clever. I stop filling when the pump clicks off first time, and I've seen 2l or so of expansion into the expansion space that that vent is there to protect and leave for expansion, so if you use those 5l, you're going to run close to losing 2 or 3l onto the road!

Maybe when the handle is put back into the machine, the diesel on the end dribbles down and causes the handle to get covered ??
