What Is The 1.6 Petrol Really Like

Large Car x Small Engine = Glacial Performance

I think it is the FSI.

Yes it is the FSI.

1.6FSI = 115bhp (on 98 octane fuel recommended), 0-62mph is 11.2 sec and 123 mph V-max.

Not earth shattering but respectably brisk. FSI is a bit rough at low revs; trait of the direct injection, but this is a staple engine for the VAG group used in Golf/Leon/Octavia.

Overall? Pays your money and takes your choice.

For me; having moved from the Fabia to an Octy II, I appreciate the more modern car in the Octy, after all Furby is now 7-8 years old for design etc, Octy has more space, doors close with a satisfying thunk, etc.

If you can handle the drop in performance then why not - go for it.

Is the 1.9 TDi out of budget? Less bhp but more usable torque.

I had a Octavia II for a courtesy car a couple of years back and i loved it ( can not remember which engine). Since I have only driven my Vrs for 4 days out of 21 I can not remember the performance of the Vrs  .

1.6 is not that bad, still has a bit of shift in it and its not often on britsh roads that you will get to the top speed ;)

I had one for a courtesy car last year, I was surprised it was a 1.6FSI as it went pretty well.

I had one as a courtesy car after my vRS Lunched itself...

Now i was used to similar spec (as the 1.6FSi) cars as i had been using them for almost 1yr before the vRS, and the Octavia 1.6, IMO, was dreadful!

VERY uncomfortable, thirsty, overtaking was sketchy, no go to it etc etc

Main problem to me was the lack of comfort, i did a mixture of town and distance driving, and it wasnt good for me atall...

Also used a lot of fuel on the motorways, quite high revs in 5th at 70-75mph IIRC, just drank the juice...

I'd add a few quid and get the 2.0FSI. Anyone who liked the 1.6 would LOVE the 2.0

Driven a fat golf plus with the 1.6 and it was ok.

Have to say preferred it to 1.9 105 bhp Octavia courtesy car I had (performance wise)

I have a 1.6 FSI (bear in mind I had a 1.4 16V Furby estate prior) and I love it. Does the wife, kids and I no harm.

Fast enough if you don't want to race the Saxo boys. Normally I have 225 bhp to play with but the 1.6 FSI my wife has is fine - I concur with the 45 mpg quite possible on a long trip. Suspension / ride is good - much better than my 10 year old "luxury executive" car - power isn't everything. The huge boot is hilarious - beats my brother in law's S class Merc by a long way. When we bought it couldn't get anywhere near the price / performance / space / looks / gizmos with any other contender - in fact specced up the nearest Golf to fine we'd need to negotiate a 4K discount and put up with the smaller boot.

Company car so when it's in for a service I get whatever is left over

I'm sure that the 1.6FSI has won numerous "What Car" awards for being a good all rounder..... Only one way to find out, get one on a 24 hour test drive

ok so the 1.9 has 70lb/ft more torque than the 1.6, but really...anyone who can't make progress in the petrol, there's something wrong with their driving. as you might guess i've the 1.6.

don't mean to upset anyone, but: what's all this deal with 'diesel torque'? ok i've driven (and owed a few of) the main heavy-oil powerplants from ford, vxl and vag and, yes they are top-notch (and if you're doing high miles and/or in a company car scheme then black pump rules); but (and i think this comes from car mags to a certain extent) i believe some folk buy diesel to be in fashion, certainly this has been the case with a couple of my friends.

does no-one, i do, rev past 2.5k with petrols anymore?

Can't speak for the 1.6 but in the 2.0 it all happens up past 3000. Totally different car when you use the middle gears - I supposed most are.

The only one I had that wasn't like that was my 3 litre V6 Escort Mk. 1 !! [showing my age].

That lorry engine didn't care what gear it was in.

Diesel suits me better due to where I take my car, such as hills in the lakes etc, the car can make decent pace on the inclines. I feel that a petrol would be hard work for me, due to having to work the engine much harder to produce torque, and would tire me out.

I do loads of motorway miles with a well loaded motor and the extra torque is put to work all the time. I do about 1000 miles a week so it would be shocking at the pumps.

I drove a petrol (1.8VVT) Vectra while waiting for my Octavia and it was very tiring to drive, always having to rev the nuts off the thing to make any progress, the 350 miles per tank was a p1ss take as well.

Not my cup of tea.
