Flashing Glow Plug Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

Had a rather alarming moment while battering down the city bypass today. The glow plug warning symbol started flashing on the dash warning lights.

I pulled into the hard shoulder and promptly called my Skoda dealer (still have 1yr warranty).

They asked me to check my brake lights, and surely enough they werent working, so they suspect that the switch has gone, but the car is safe enough (if not legal enough) to drive.

Is this a common fault?

They are going to pick the car up from my work on Monday and have a look at it.

Here's hoping it really is that simple!!!

just replace the bulbs, it's built in to make you pull over and check for a fault

Yeah I thought it might just be a bulb out, but neither of them are working. Does it stop them both working then?

no Its a warning that at least 2 have failed

I only know this because it happened to my wife, and as luck would have it my mate is a vw master mechanic

OK, looks like it's going to the dealer on Monday then! Cheers.

I'll stick my neck out here and say its definately the brake light switch that has failed - a single bulb failing is one thing but both AND (I take it) the high level light light assembly not lighting up points to the brake light switch. Not very unusual at all, when this fails it can bring up quite a selection of panel lights depending on the actual engine/kit fitted to the car. In fact if you pass by the VW van centre at Bilston they will sell you one and so avoid losing your car while it gets fixed free - that's what I did to my wife's Polo (can't be bothered getting inconvenienced by using the warranty if the problem is simple and check to fix) - just a personal view and what you do depends on your personal technical competance.

This is a common fault on VW's - happened with my Bora - ECL light came on and then I noticed a strange blue flashing light in my rear view mirror... It was the cops who very kindly informed me that none of my brakes lights were working! The switch had indeed gone and it cost about
