Left/Right Wobble when accelerating

Featured Replies

In addition to my post about a clunk when turning left, I also (still) seem to have a wobble from the front of the car that feels like the car is wobbling slightly from left to right. This only seems apparent when accelerating. As soon as the power is off, or the clutch is pushed in, the wobble goes away. Is this a sign of an iffy clutch, or is it the dual mass flywheel thingy? Assuming it is one of these, what would the recommendations be regarding replacing one or the other, or both, and whether there are any lighter or stronger kits that may also release a few more horses?

Cheers

No ideas on this one guys??

I think whatever the cause is, it sounds expensive. I therefore want to make sure I have done my homework before commiting to the expense, only to find it made no difference

At a long shot.. its not torque steer is it? Hard acceleration can seem to pull the car to either side. If its actually a 'wobble' though, I have no idea, sorry.

Thanks for replying. It does it under normal acceleration, so I think I could rule that one out.

Thanks all the same

Maybe the tracking is out or the alloys need balancing??

This was the first thing I thought of as I recently had new rubber on the fronts. However, I visited my friendly local fitter who took the wheels off, checked the balancing, checked the tracking, and checked for any play in the wheels when on the car. They even spun the fronts up with the front of the car jacked up. They reckon everything looks fine. They even test drove it with me and confirmed it did not feel right. One guy in the garage suggested maybe drive shafts.

I took it to my mechanic today who (although did not have time to test drive it) suggested maybe drive shaft(s). He said that if it were the DMF, I would be describing more symptoms. The most noticeable way to reproduce this is to drive steadily at 50MPh in 4th, then push your foot on the loud peddle. Whilst the acceleration is not hard, it really does get a good wobble on.

I thought maybe I would leave it for a while to see what gets worse (or breaks !). At least then I don't risk paying for a fix that may not work.

??

Driveshafts?

Unsure why theyve said that as usually if the CVs are causing problems theyll give a ticking sound not a wobble.

I dunno, I am just as confused :banghead:

It just don't feel right. Perhaps someone more proficient with Skoda's such as a main dealer needs to drive it to figure out what it could be ??

:help:

Get the new tyres finger plate balanced... solved by problems which were similar :)

Just a thought here

Have you checked the engine mounts, the dog bone mount is prone to wear

Balancing is what causes the wobble. Mine actually wobble a bit on acceleration - I think perhaps one of my weights has fallen off or something. Not to worry - 4 new tyres going on in 2 days and they'll be rebalanced. :)

So basically, it could be anything !!

Balancing, tracking, CV's, driveshafts, tyres, alloys, engine mounts :(

My problem is where do I start. What can I check myself? How easy is it to check the engine mounts? I did not want to start shelling money out for somebody to keep replacing bits in the hope that they finally nail the problem - or do i just leave it until it gets more obvious as to where it's coming from ?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Confused :Kick_Can_

Check easy stuff first - balancing is nice and easy to check. It won't be tracking, because that's simply a direction thing and won't be a wobble. I believe it's pretty unlikely to be CV/shaft related. buckled wheel is a possible. Put the front end in the air and just spin a wheel out of gear and check it runs true. Engine mounts? Doubt it. But leave that and the driveshafts until last. Do balancing 1st, then possible buckle, then look into the more mechanical areas.

Id maybe get a second opinion from a reputable garage regarding the wheel balancing.
