Smelly Windscreen Washer???

Featured Replies

My screenwash is 4+ years old now (I don't use it) and I dread to think what it is like in there. Do you have to take the wheel arch liner out to get to the bottle or does syphoning the old water out work?

Also where does the rear screen wash come from?

You're not itching for the 5 litre washer bottle upgrade then?! :D

Rear screenwash comes from same washer bottle. There's 2 pumps in the bottle, one piped to front, one to rear.

Always add screenwash additive, here's as good a reason as any http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10293519

Hi guys

Take the bottle out and give it a good clean with fairy and hot water,

Could water hardness play a part in this too, I've never experienced this on mine or SWMBO's car?

fixed it thankfully. drained it all out filled up with water and sprayed out in 3 second bursts till empty again then put 500ml of concentrate wash in and sprayed out and then topped up with vag wash and all good!

Beat me to it on this one with the BBC linky:

Quite high risk of legionnaires disease if no additive or the wrong type is used, its an ideal place for the bacteria to grow, then we atomise it over the ventilation system intake.........

After giving the inside of the bottle a good wash out, try sticking in a big bottle of Dettol neat and leaving it in there for a few days. Dettol probably won't do as much damage as a bleach

Those washer bottles are a good source of legionnaires disease, I think the BBC had a story on it a few months ago. Dettol should be OK, and some boiling water.

No benefit in using VAG screenwash. All stuff is the same, only diluted alcohol and water in it. I used to work on an Isopropanol plant and we used to sell our crappy quality isopropanol as screen wash.

I thought using the non-VAG stuff MAY clog up the jets? - remember reading that on here.

Anyway, I've always used the VAG stuff just to be safe - it's not expensive and I hardly ever have to top mine up anyway (I'd probably make an annual saving of about £1.50 by using non-VAG!).

I always carry a litre of oil, a bottle of VAG coolant, and VAG screenwash (diluted 1/4) in the boot.

I use the Halfords flourescent yellow screenwash

myself. Never had an issue with

a. Smell

b. Frozen washer bottle. 50/50 mixture got me through last winter

c. Blocked fan jets.

Does look a bit like strong wee though :D

The blocking up of fan jets can happen, BUT do you realise that a replacement jet is around £4..... so it's not exactly end of the world if you have to replace them (I did when I bought this fabia 2nd hand)!

VAG screenwash is soooo expensive, yes you can mix it, but omg it's really expensive for what you get.

and compared to what u can get at tescos / adsa blue, 5litre screen wash for £2, which is sometimes in concentrated form too.

In the winter months you can really hammer the screenwash

Bloody 'ell, it's £3-odd a litre, which equates to four litres once diluted with water - and people say the sweaties are tight !
