Anyone have experience of using 1 of these?

Featured Replies

A few years ago i did some work experience in a bodyshop where they used these wheels, they were quite good and from what i remember they didn't mark the paint finish at all.

I just pulled mine off the car gently, and used my thumb to try and roll off the big stuff left, and cleaned up with a cloth and tar remover. Never used one of those gimmicks though.

Halfrauds have a 3 for 2 on Autoglym at the moment so it's probably easier to get the Glue and Tar remover, just thought if this wheel was better it might be worth a try.

I thought it might be awkward to get into tight areas in the bumper recess though.

Need to think what else in the Autoglym range I want, already got SRP and EGP, bits of a Megs fan and feel most of the AG range is pants.

Go for 2 tar removers and 1 glass polish. It's the only stuff I use - Oh, the metal polish is pretty good for the shiny bits.

I have always used nail polish remover, its just something to remove the glue thats all.

I forgot I have the glass polish as well, will I actually need 2 lots of Glue and Tar, not sure what the size of the bottle (500ml?) and how much you use as never tried it before.

Might get some interior seat cleaning stuff!

Just taken 2 of the strips off and cleaned up the front but the rear has left loads of adhesive behind and it's gone hard, the AG intensive tar remover won't touch it and I've stopped before I do any damage.

I think I'll have to order the E-Bay item and hopefully that will do the trick!

Try warming the adhesive with a hair dryer and applying the tar remover while it is warm. That should hopefully soften up the glue.

I can't help but think that if that wheel can take off hardened glue it will damage paint.

I tried with the hairdryer at the time and it made no difference to be honest.

The wheel is designed for the specific purpose of removing the adhesive without damaging the paint.

I've e-mailed the seller asking about the condition of the glue and if this wheel will still work but we'll see what he says.

My VW dealer said they use something similar to remove old glue but didn't say where they got their's from.

getting the glue hot and just white spirit has always worked for me.

It just takes along time to do thats all

I've ordered 1 of the wheels but I'll try the white spirit and heat first, I was thinking of trying nail varnish but not sure what effect this would have on the paint.

I'd say that acetone should damage the paint, but then you can't be sure as it can effect cellulose based paints, so I'd personally give it a miss.

nail varnish remover will kill off the paint so dont do that!

thats why i just stuck it doing it the hard way as i know its paint safe

Looking at the glue/adhesive again I think it may have been stuck back on using super glue, that give an idea of what the left over looks like.

Hoping that the other side which all looks as it should prior to removing the strips is stuck on using the conventional method and should be alot easier to get off.

Looking forward to the wheel arriving, if it doesn't work or I think it may do any damage then I think I'll try some super glue remover if that's a thing that exists!

You can buy superglue remover from Halfords.

Cool thanks for the heads up, I'll keep it in mind as the next stage if needs be!

I used a similar wheel to that shown in the picture, that I borrowed from my mate. He works in a bodyshop dept at a main Ford garage so I trusted him with the advise on using the wheel for this particular job. It was fantastic & easy to use. The whole job of removing all the door strips & fitting the new ones he had painted for me was done in just over two hours!! It never marked the paint either.

Thats good to know,

I am still waiting on it arriving so I popped to B & Q today and got some Loctite Super Glue Remover and have put this on, need to leave it for a couple of hours to work it's magic and hope it works.

Second side of the car will hopefully be a dam site easier!

Update.

Received the wheel today.

Tried it when I got home and all I can say is it's perfect for the job.

It didn't look like it was anywhere near marking the paint but removed the double sided adhesive foam that the old trim was attached with.

Given the cost I did the driver's side (2 trims) with loads of the adhesive left on the doors in under half an hour and that included polishing and thoroughly cleaning prior to sticking the new trim.

Car looks so much better now with all the chrome trim on relacing the black, I'll try and get some pics up once I've washed the car, leaving the adhesive to bond properly.

Thanks again for everyones help and opinions, it was much appreciated.

Glad you just finally got it all sorted mate

Cheers one of those jobs that you think will take a couple of hours and becomes an absolute pig. If someone hadn't used super glue as a quick fix it would have been fine but that's what happens when you buy second hand cars I suppose.

The adhesive removing wheel really is the dogs danglies and I'd recommend to anyone needing to remove the body mouldings.
