I now have a Skoda din dash kit adaptor and a few bits to enable me to get my own stereo in my Octavia II.

Instead of using the factory CAN BUS wiring adaptor and messing around with the fuse box, does it matter if I choose to run in my own power and earth connections for the stereo.

I want the stereo to work when the engine is not running, and it is a lot easier to run a seperate power from the battery then it is to mess with the fuse box. (I'll have a 4awg cable coming in for the amps anyway)

Does the CAN BUS system expect to see a stereo connected and NOT expect to see a current draw when the engine is off, or am I quite safe to wire it in myself ?

There will be virtually no current draw from the head unit as all the speakers are amped externally.

I wouldn't have said that it was easier to run directly from the battery.

The kit tells you which position to use which is ignition switched. With some carefull selection you could use another position - It's not difficult.

The better solution would be to buy the CAN unit from somewhere like bluespot.

I may have worded the first post slightly incorrect. I am competant and OK with the physical side of the instalation, but what I need to know is if the cars electrical system will work OK with nothing connected to the factory stereo harness coming from the vehicle.

My intention is to take the factory stream out, leave the plugs alone then simply wire in my own head unit. (Be it from the fuse box, battery etc etc. As long as it has a +12V permanant live on a correctly fused supply that'll do me.

I spose I can just have a play when I get round to doing it. If it doesn't work how I want, I'll mess with it till it does :P

It'll be fine. The only issue you'll have is that the Stream is actually a controller so you'll have a CAN Controller fault code - no biggy though.
