Clampdown on modified exhausts (EU directive)

Clampdown on modified exhausts - Politics - Ireland - Breaking News - Belfast Telegraph

Boy racers have until next July to get rid of modified exhaust pipes on their cars, under an EU directive on noise pollution.

The law which comes into effect next year will ban the exhausts as part of a range of measures aimed at reducing noise emissions.

But it's not yet clear how the government will enforce the rule, or whether drivers could face fines for having enlarged exhaust pipes.

Seems very vague that article. Can understand if they're basing a ruling on dB output...

hhmm.. judging by the state of most of the cars on the road I wont hold my breathe on this one actually being enforced, unless they can develop a roadside camera to do it... :(

hopefully the ban also affects motorbikes with modified exhausts. I'm tiered of trying to relax on a weekend and all I can here is motorbikes racing around the twisty roads out here in the country.. They would object to people on bikes racing past their houses with noisy bean cans on their bikes.

There already is a law covering motorbike exhausts but many riders still happily fit cans that are outside the law.

oh, it sounds like a law for the sake of a law.

Whats the point in making all these laws that can't be enforced?

Because currently they cant easily pin a fine on you for making too much noise. If you're breaking a law it is easier for them to fine you for an "illegal" exhaust.

which is very true but the police force allready have enough work on without expecting them to take on more work.

I do agree that it is a good idea though

I think it should only cover engines of 1.6 and below - because lets face it, they're the cars that sound bloody awful with a loud exhaust!

very true. and at the end of the day loud does not equal more power.

And I think everyone will agree that an Aston martin V8 at the same drive-by dB level as a 1.1 Fiesta will be a lot less offensive.

But sorely lacking in comedy value...

Will this at some future stage affect Track & Rally cars, especially as Rally cars use the public roads.

I can't see how this would be put into affect. It would put every exhaust manufacturer out of business. I don't think its the way to do it.

I agree that over a certain db level, the noise of these <1.6l cars is annoying, but this article is just there to anger anyone who has a modified exhaust (including me), instead of telling that an exhaust above a certain noise level will not be tolerated.

hope they are not thinkin about this up here? i got 1 on me wish list... ;)

What you really need is a variable exhaust.
