Big hole = Bent alloy ?

Featured Replies

Went down a pot hole on Saturday night not at excessive speed as the little one was in so never really noticed anything apart from a loud bang.

Gave the car a good ragging on Sunday (toying with a cooper S) and the car felt awefull. Just got back from quick fit and they have balanced the wheel but it still vibrates between 65mph to 80mph. So I've popped in to my local dealer who is going to check every thing out tomorrow. If the wheel is bent where do I stand with regards the highways / local council as I seem to remeber my old driving instructor getting a new alloy for a similar incident. I'm off to get some pictures now with the cam and my tape measure as evidence of the above.

Any help / advice would be appreciated

The Kwikfit boys should have been able to tell if the wheel was buckled while it was on the balancing machine - may be worth asking them to spin it again and look for wobbling. I'd think you'd be VERY lucky to get money from the council - everybody would be doing it otherwise .... wouldn't they? :rubchin:

Also check that your tracking hasn't been knocked out.

Yep, it's very difficult to get money off the council. If you want to do this-

1. Get a photo of said hole, and details, street, time of day, type of road etc. Include a ruler or other object in photo to allow them to see how big hole is and who has responsibility for the road maintenance.

2. See if any evidence of other people driving into it is around-ie wheel trims lying at the side of the road, or if anybody else drives into it at the time get them to support you.

3. Get estimates for repairs and costs from 2 garages

4. Send off copies of all your stuff to relevant body. Do not send off originals as councils are good at loosing things

They should send a letter back to acknowledge your claim (hole will be filled in) and then you'll get the result. IIRC the concil only has to check the road every month if this has been done and hole has since appeared they won't pay.

Have a load of kids then give up work? ;)

Just gone and got pictures hole measured 1.7 x .7 with a depth between 75 and 125mm also went to see a chap who I know who lives in the area who said that "the council can't afford to fix the roads as they are paying so much out in compensation" . So there might be hope I'll make my mind up tomorrow once I've been to the dealers if it's a case of balancing and tracking I'll get it done as I'm not one for moaning but if it's more then I shall be writing to Newark & Sherwood council together with the photo's. I'm not one for complaing but Road tax keeps going up and the Community charge (or whatever it's called these days) keeps going up and what does the moterist get out of this bugger all apart from more little hitlers in their white vans and cameras trying to relieve me of another sixty quid.
