The Return of MG

Featured Replies

MG are now taking orders for the new 2008 MGTF LE500. Any takers?

Not for me, it's showing it's age despite the cosmetic tweaks. The interior looks very dated.

Indeed. Anyone know when this car was actually launched? It's got to be over ten years old now, surely. remodelling ancient designs was the downfall of Rover as a whole IMO.

Seen a few with the coverings on for about 8 months around here.

Only small changes to the exterior.

made in China?

1995 , so it's 12 years old now

No it's made in Longbridge, so there should be some chance of surviving instant death on impact.

made in China?

Nope, IIRC it's still made out of steel and shiny plastic...............................

Anyway, the previous incarnation of the TF did pretty well, 4 stars in fact so as long as it's made in Brum it will be fairly safe.

Err, I think the fact it will be made in England will be it's biggest downfall.

We just aren't capable of putting cars together properly, look at the new Avensis, 'made in England' it says on the windscreen, that must be why they all fall apart:rolleyes:

Better here than in China, the paint will be full of lead and will weigh about 4 tons.

Thought MG stood for 'Monosodium Glutamate'?

Bleugh! I never liked the MG-F, I always saw it as an ugly, overweight Elise (I know it only shared an engine but still).

The mx-5 is a better car dynamically , but the MGF/TF do have a loyal fan base here , it might still sell well.

Honda Civic anybody?

i feel quite let down, i hoped the 500 would be something to do with power or power to weight :(

Nope , that's as many as they'll sell , ever

wasn't the MG-F actually a good car? handled well, with the 160BHP engine went very well and was nice to drive?

Keep all our mechanics in business

If it doesn't break down first.

Yeah, if you like wet feet and a self-steam-cleaning engine, and bits that fall off.

Ahh but I somewhat suspect that Honda keep a slightly tighter reign on there staff than Rover ever did.

One of my mates used to get a pallet of gearboxes every couple of weeks off the back of a rover lorry, How the feck can you not notice that many gearboxes going missing?

Not to mention the free K-Series engines he used to get from rectification!

Seriously, the unique way the K-series was put together meant no-one knew what anyone else was doing, so engines would get built and when they arrived at testing, a lot of them would fail due to minor problems like having a piston missing, or being built with no gaskets at all:eek:

The engines that didn't pass testing were sent to rectification to be sorted, but so many failed that rectification couldn't keep up and junked the engines as scrap, these would be aquired by said mate and out of a few knackered ones he'd build a perfectly good one.

No-wonder Rover went bust, everyone else around Longbridge in the motor trade was raking it in:rolleyes:
