Why were you slaughtered on another forum ?

It wasn't a motor forum, never mind a Skoda forum so that was a bad move for a start.

It's the sort of place that unless you've just bought a BMW then it's subject to total abuse. I made the mistake of firstly mentioning that it was a Skoda (got well roasted for that) and secondly that it cost £20k which was the nail in the coffin.

No matter what I said it made no difference and instead of giving me useful advice, they just kept throwing all sorts of other cars that I could've bought for the same money (2nd-hand of course.) In addition, people seemed to be queueing up to have a go at my reasons for buying a brand new car as opposed to buying one used (they don't like brand new cars for some reason!)

Thing is, they weren't comparable cars I mean, how is an RX-8 in the same class as an Octavia for instance?

After that experience I thought I'd come back to a like-minded community like Briskoda. A very friendly bunch of people by and large, at least I can announce that I proudly own a Skoda without fear of being stoned to the death!

How can this be a strength? I certainly wouldn't call a car that doesn't know what it's supposed to be 'appealing'

Ahhh, it's because it can do everything.

If I want to move a fridge freezer, I can. If I want to pack the car up for a week away on business I can. If I need to take 3 collegues to a meeting 300 miles away in comfort, I can. If I need to go somewhere and the weather is really bad, I can (It has ESP as standard, it was a £500 option on the Fabia). If I want to plug my MP3 into the Stereo, I can. If I want to put my baby in the front seat next to me, I can. If I want to drive 550 miles on one tank and not feel knackered when I get there, I can. (My Roomy is sooo much better over distance than the Fabia which could be quite tiring, especially in traffic). If I want to loose my license by going into three figures all the time, then I can, but it's a lot less likely

The list goes on and I know you can do a lot of those things in an Octy but they cost more to buy and more to run.

For what it's worth, I'm not here to start a fight with anyone but everyone has their own opinion, myself included. Sometimes opinions divide people but that's the way life is unfortunately.

You don't have to worry about that, this is a healthy discussion and opinions are always welcome especially when you have the courtesy and wherewithall to back them up in which case it's most welcome and it means anyone can look at this forum and make a better informed choice or decision either way based on a balanced and coherent discourse! (Which is why I got a bit vocal at Oilburningnut

Well, thats kind of the same thing with the Roomy. It is a difficult car to pigeon hole infact you can't really do it so anything you compare it against is going to be better in someways.

A lot of people are coming in here after having had a 2 day test drive in a low powered base model and going "That's B0ll0ck5". It probably is at poverty spec like everthing else would be but they never go through it properly as putting a point of view across more like "this is my opinion, therfore it must be right"

Honestly, when you look at the Scout or the 3, nothing comes close for the money, but you really have to look at the competition to realise it

To a large extent I agree with you on that one. When my car went in for the first time last week, the garage gave me a fairly low spec Octavia Ambiente 1.6 petrol. The engine was awful (I'm a diesel convert anyway so I'm hard to please!) and, much like the Roomster in this case, the spec was fairly basic. It's hard to believe that it's the same model as my car but in a lower spec trim! My car felt like a palace after driving that car round for a few days and I wouldn't have bought an Octavia based on the car that the garage gave me. Just goes to show what a difference the trim level can make.

In a lot of ways the same can be said for the Roomster. This is my first experience in a Roomster of any description and obviously my opinion of it is less than favourable, mainly due to the spec. Put me in a top of the range Roomster and I would probably have a different outlook on it.

Oww love you! When your "Needs" change you will see things a bit differently and hopefully by then you will have driven a few more "modern cars" and you will have a broader, more experianced opinion. I mean, you run a VRS which feels 20x more cheap and nasty inside than a well specced Roomy (Despite the leather) and they handle with all grace of a dead cat. Which Roomster was it (1, 2, 3, Scout)? IF the dealer gave you a base model with the thin wheels and poverty grade interior then that would be about right but I can assure you that the 3 and the Scout are a lot nicer.

Whats wrong with the price? £13k for a fully loaded Scout? (Bearing in mind you paid the wrong side of 12 grand for a end of line hatchback with a crap stereo and bad stutter!!!) Still if you are parking it 1/2 a mile away from your house then at least your getting some exersize!

this is my third vrs,i had a mk 2 octy and its not just a fabia problem trust me they all start creaking,the octy from about 15k and less than 12 months,the se has started at 4k and is in at simpsons as i type,i get a new car at 6-12months when i get bored so i couldn't really care less,i have never owned a car with 50k on it so can't really comment,when i bought this car i had a 35k budget and the fabia is the only car i have ever owned more than once,i have never said they are perfect far from it but for some reason i love them,must be one of those heart over head choices,the scout looks better than the normal roomster,but it would have to be specced better than the one we took to harewood house,maybe the hard shiney plastic dash changes on a high spec one,i don't know but the two i have driven have both been aweful.

its all about what cars you've owned though isnt it? ive had that many brand new cars in just under a year (helps working in the car industry!) and i have to disagree. the roomster is a brilliant car. its just not conventional, or (dare i say it) cool enough compared to say, a vrs. but that dosnt make it crap or overpriced

BUT is comfy, easy to drive, got some nice kit and a half decent engine. Now i currently use the roomster scout 1.9tdi which is just under the level 3 car, but i have been also mooching about in a level 2 1.4tdi. i have not had the chance to have a bash in the level one. If you drive a octavia or equivilant car then of course you wont find the interior as good as the car you drive, but the roomster is built to be more versitile and hard wearing.

Plus the reason you dont like it is its not aimed at you. I get so many people coming in and trying the car out as they need the space (not speed) ease of getting in and out (not plushness) the storage space (not leather seats) the visability, etc etc.

I went from a fabia 1.4tdi estate to an ex-demo roomster2 1.4tdi . Had it three weeks and highly delighted . Tons of space , comfy , economical and as good performance ( ? ) as fabia had .

The car ( and me ) not in to screaming away from traffic lights but plenty mid-range torque . Only quibble is spec - things I had on ambiente Fabia missing on roomster 2 .( Fog lights , cubbyholes in boot and panel light rheostat. )

I spose the roomsters not for everyone

I had a great Octavia & it was till that point the best car I ever had - totally reliable & so great to drive

I liked the look of the roomster & the one thing I was looking for was a little extra height due to a back problem & the roomster has that as the octy was causing me to bend my head forward as thw windscreen is a little low for a tall person like me

after doing 7k in my roomster I find it just as easy to drive as the Octavia, better mpg & a bit more nippy although I only have the 1.4tdi compared to the 1.9 Octy

its a better shape for us as I run a couple of businesses and rarely need to load it up but when I do the extra room is much better & it was great on a holiday to the highlands, a total pleasue to drive

I find the build & quality just as good as the Octy in all respects, mins a R 2, I did think the R 1 was a bit basic though

However - the Roomster is not an Octavia, its a totally different beast.

Both are excellent.

We are about the get a 2nd vehicle for my misses & I think we shall get another Roomster as I can't fault it.

Several friends thought it was a bit daft at first, down to looks but now they are considering one after giving ours a test drive.

I do like the look of the scout & if I can persuade the misses to take mine Ill go for a scout

Sure its short on luxuries but you're not going to expect them on a base model.

If you have a top of the range model you'll only frown when presented with the prices and options list.

Mind you the only luxuries on my car are the manual opening sunroof and electric mirrors.

One thing I cant fathom out is why they charge for under seat storage boxes and a third head rest.

Is Cruise Control standard on all Skodas now?

:thumbup:I ordered my Roomster 2 1.6 Auto/Tiptronic though Motability on 24th September 2007, it was built on the 26th November, took 10 to 14 days to arrive in Wolves and I finally got the keys on Christmas Eve. There is even plenty of room for a wheelchair or scooter because as you know the back seat move forward. I have to say that so far it is the best car I have driven, after years of Scénics' I have seen the light. It is a dream to drive. FANTASTIC!!!:thumbup:

That was kind of the point and if you had read the rest of the post/thread you probably would have realised it was all a bit of fun and was a really good discussion (Which is what we do here, we discuss things).

If your going be let that put you off test driving a car you probably really need to get some perspective in your life. Can I suggest some charity work?
