De-coking TDi engine

Featured Replies

Thats very valid indeed Bas. I try to give it some welly atleast once a week (every 500 miles or so), just full throttle and about 4k rpm for a short while to blast the ****e out. :)

Once a week  I've a nice uphill slip road that is good for redline in 2nd on the way home from work (or even 3rd if I'm feeling naughty - and the road is clear) ... just after the engine is properly warmed up too. :D

How easy is it to remove the turbo once you've removed the manifold, EGR etc...

And will soaking the turbo in something like carb cleaner cause any problems? Don't mind taking it to bits as long as I don't damage it by doing so... :)

I happen to be swapping the turbo atm - it is a bit of a PITA tbh.

Everything is tucked out of sight and the bolts on the turbo are torqued at 40Nm. Difficult to get an air impact wrench wedged in there and hard going. Of course 38 degree heat and 100+% humidity are making it pretty bad!

Removing the EGR and intake manifold wasn't too bad - bolts are only 20Nm on the intake part and pretty easy to get to (comparitively)...

There are a few posts on cleaning the turbo if you google for them - when you think of how carefully they are balanced, etc makes you wonder if you want to try it!

Cheers

Bas

If I remember correctly Bills is a high miler so that would explain a lot of it.

The one I have just done was in a similar state Bill. Took quite a lot of effort to open the casing, it was well wedged on there.

Remember Bas I have a Passat, the engine is mounted longitudinally, and being a massive engine bay, its all very exposed and easy to do.

Think I'll just start dismantling it. :P

Great stuff mate - good luck then!

Cheers

Bas

didn't take the inlet manifold off on the Galaxy as access down the back of the bulkhead is minimal , so almost everything was done underneath, oil feed pipe was a **** as the union came undone from the turbo , had to jam a lever in to stop it turning

When you guys go on about limp mode at 3k would that be the feeling that it wont rev over 3k?????

if so this is whats wrong with mine! i've replaced all the vaccum pipes as they where f*cked and also welded a crack in the downpipe.

Seems to be a bit better but still not boosting right.. I've got a bit of play in the main shaft bearings so might get a new turbo..

any idea's the best turbo to get or what will fit?? my cars a 2000 plate 1.9tdi

You can use the fabia vRS turbo quite easily. Straight swap. Or check out Allard Motor Company for their range of PD hybrid turbos. :)

play in the turbo shaft bearings is ok , as long as the turbine blades don't touch the sides

limp mode just feels like the engine won't pull you out of bed , probably 60 mph tops and half an hour to get there

It no longer does go back into the intake. ;)

Have you got a picture of your current setup for the ccv then ?

Well, my current setup is not favoured amongst the brisky do-gooders so I'll avoid piccies. Suffice to say it goes to "atmos" now. :)

go on mate - some pic's - even emailed?

It's nowt exciting! Just a pipe disappearing into the area behind the engine. :) And capped off where the pipe went into the TIP before.

I found that using carb cleaner or brake cleaner caused heavy pinking on startup after!!

so i used diesel!!! works great and doesn't cause any problems.

found out the MAF sensor was the issue all along although everything else i've done will help the general running i'm sure :D

thanks to all who offered advice.

Hi,

Can you give some detail instructions on how to remove and disassemble the turbo you show in your pics and are there seals and gaskets to buy too?

Graham

exhaust manifold gasket and downpipe gasket , possibly a couple of gaskets for the EGR pipe, the inlet manifold maybe full of cr@p also so maybe when the turbo is off , clean that out too , so gasket required for that

the parts you strip on the turbo to access the vains don't have a gasket as such , and its just 4 x 10mm headed bolts to undo to split the turbo apart , and 3 screws when its apart to remove the vain mechanism

just to warn you , it could be a big job on your car to get the turbo out
