K&N 57i

Featured Replies

I fitted my bolt on air filter the other day and am well impressed with it. I had the PD 160 pipe and K&N panel filter before. My engine revs really freely and no issues with heat soak either? There is plenty of cold air entering the engine when you drive and it has made my Milltek sound really deep and throaty. Bought a :D to my face again when I drive it. The air filter isnt that noisy either, plus it looks good under the bonnet. It took 15 minutes to fit and is well worth it!

What sort of noise does it make mate? Do you get any chatter when you back lift off the throttle?

There is no chatter and it is fairly quiet under normal driving. You can hear it sucking when you are on part throttle, but when you put your foot down... it growls!

Could you post some pictures of the setup?

I have currently Pipercross Viper in my Fabia with Milltek. The Vipers cold air pipe isn't too good, because it makes very sharp turn after the filter, and I bet it is restricting the air flow. Therefore I have used it without cold air pipe, and then it is quite noisy...

So I'm curious to know how K&N has solved the cold air pipe problem...

whats this clatter noise?

i just ordered a powertec SL1 filter, but have yet to get a similar cold air feed to the PD160 intake

Here are the pictures of the K&N installed. I have angled the PD 160 pipe towards the area where airfilter is installed. There is plenty of air that comes from behind the front left headlight and around the battery case, plus through the front of the car. Also, I think it looks good on the car.

The chatter noise is (I think) the wastegate opening to release the excess exhaust gases.

Thanks for the pics, 53FabiaVRS.

K&N is quite different compared to Viper, I'll try to post some pictures when I got home.

The "chatter noise" can't be wastegate though, because Furbie doesn't have one at all...

But at least with Viper I get a sound a bit like blow-off valve opening on petrol cars if I suddenly release the gas pedal after quick acceleration. I'm not sure what causes it...

I was always under the impression that fitting anything other than the PD160 pipe was likely to cause the MAF to have issues

The MAF only has issues if the filters are over-oiled. Over time the MAF gets coated in oil and as a result cannot operate properly. I have a Powertec one for this reason, doesn't need oiling. I've kept the PD160 pipe and directed it towards the filter for some cooler air.

It will be sucking in hot air and over time you will start getting flatspots in your rev range

Well, I've had the Viper for 3 years and 70000km now, and have had no problems with MAF. I have been careful not to oil it too much, because I think the excess oil going to MAF might cause it to fail.

Anyhow it is good to clean MAF sometimes. I just did it last week, and there might be slight improvement in acceleretion, but it may just be my imagination too :)

how has the powertec been running for you? after doing some extensive research, only you seem to have it, so i bought one :)

is the filter quite big compared to the K&N above? doesnt take long to fit i hope!

plus, do you get any flat spots with it due to heat soak and stuff?

Hi,

I've not had any problems with the kit. The only annoying thing was when it came to fitting it. Two of the screw holes were too small so i had to drill them out. Other than that it was very easy to fit. The Filter is the same size as other cone filters, just made out of stainless steel. The actual fitting kit is basically the same as Pipercross's effort, if not exactly the same.

As for performance, I found that the engine was smoother but I put it on to replace a dirty filter. The noise it makes is great, when lifting off the throttle sometimes it sounds like a dump valve! Not noticed any flat spots or heat soak, but then again I'm running an FMIC. So any hot air entering the filter goes through the (hot) turbo, but gets cooled before entering the engine anyway.

whoa, on what part, the filter or the bits under the hood? :o

did it take long to fit then?

I remember now, it was the long thin metal bracket that goes from the car body to the top of the filter to support it. One end of the bracket was fine, the screw by the suspension mount went straight through it. However the other end of the bracket, where the filter attaches to, the hole was a tad too small. So had to enlarge it. Probably about 1 mm out. The rest of it was fine though.

Here are couple of pics of Pipercross Viper installation.

As you can see, the intake pipe makes really tight curve, and for sure it is not good for the air flow. I have used it mostly without the pipe. I may someday route it on the right side of the battery, but it will require quite a lot of work.

hey man, just got my powertec but the instructions are crap... it mentions to remove (F) but nothing indictating (F) in the pics lol. And where does the lil rubber pipe go? Grrr...

with the intake pipe like that i seriously doubt it wil be performing any better than the standard setup with a pd160 intake

Not meaning to hijack the thread but we can offer very good deals on k+n and pipercross so if anyone is interested then please drop us a line!

100% It isn't any better than a 160 intake.

Plus the hose won't last long either.

You need to remove the air box completely. (F) might be the clip that holds the pipe where the MAF is. If you remove this, it's much easier to remove the air box, both top and bottom part. The little rubber pipe goes onto the pipe that led into the old airbox, and the other end goes onto the air filter. The instructions are pretty useless but keep at it and it's quite simple really.
