clutch and gearbox problems

Featured Replies

i seem to be having nothing but problems with my felly in the past few weeks

my clutch has been on its way out for a while now, as in it is so close to the top you literally have to tap it to change gear and everyone who drives my car complains about it. But recently it seems to be having issues in first gear pulling away it is very sluggish and jumpy and in all the other gears at low revs there is just no power in there at all.

My gearbox is quite worrying as well as when in gear you can move the gearstick side to side by a good inch/inch and a half either way.

is there any chance these problems could be related, also how much does a new clutch cost?

clutch is not a lot. getting it fitted is a lot.

my clutch is fine, and it bites really high up, makes for good high speed changes.

as for the play, mine is cut-down so there isnt much, but if it were full length there would be about an inch i would say.

yeh found one place i can get one for £55 , so ill get that in a week or two when i get some money quite despertaly needs doing mind as ive been told its really bad.

The gears are quite worrying though as it really does lack any power in first

My gearstick has got a fair amount of play in it, so thats probably just worn bushes somewhere. I've just had my clutch done and it now bites about 3cm from the floor which is interesting. It cost me £180, but I did have to put the gearbox top mount back on myself cause they fitted it upside down (symptoms are a metal on metal rubbing sound when you put your foot down. That and it LOOKS wrong).

Does your clutch just not need adjusting as they are not self adjusting.

Mind if it is anything like mine you will need to grind the nut off and replace it with a wing nut like it should have had on from the start!!!

the low power could just be coincidental . give it a good service and see how it goes after that

I'm guessing with the gearstick the linkage is worn. My favorit is similar and the gear stick rattles in certain gears.

i think the gear linkages must just be worn as it has been abused a little bit...trying to keep up with my mates renault 5 round some lanes quick gear changes probably didnt help so much

im in the process of servicing it, just gotta try fitting the fuel filter not the most fun of jobs

i dont know how i would adjust my clutch or how i would know if it needed doing really

cant afford new clutch or gearbox at the moment anyway an by the sounds of it, not really a major problem so ill just leave it be i think, thanks for all the help though guys

The clutch adjusting mechanism is on top of the clutch housing and has a cable attatched to it and some sort of anti-shake thing on the adjusting nuts that looks like a metal bar. I'm not sure if this adjusts the clutch itself or just the pedal height inside the car.

:) If the clutch is slipping you'll find that when accelerating the engine will rev merrily away without actually making the car go much [if any] faster.

If that's the case then yeah, the 2 problems are related.

if the clutch is slipping then would you beed to buy a new one? or is there a way of fixing it?

It depends wether its slipping because it needs adjusting.

If its not adjusted properly, when the pedal is up, the actual clutch might still be open slightly, causing it to slip.

This would explain why you only need to tap the clutch to change gear and not push all the way down.

My clutch starts to bite about a couple of cm's from the bottom, and not a couple of cm's from the top!!! lol

Your clutch pedal should be level with the brake pedal. Mine isn't!!

Basically the adjustment adjusts the height of the pedal
