Hello Peeps (question about MFD2)

Featured Replies

I'd forgotton what username and email I used to register last time

Anyhow I've just changed my (bloody fantastic) VRs furby after 2 years and 50K miles for a 1.9pd Octavia elegance (55 plate, 12K) on pain of death that we needed something more practical.

Well I've had it a couple of weeks now and just wondering if the MFD2 is a good investment (looking at one of the fleabay links on stu's site) or should I just stick with my TOM TOM and save myself 400 quid as I have heard that a lot of the navagation software on these incar systems are ropey but I havn't hard anything either way about this one.

I have it fitted and think it is a good investment... do you also have teh maxidot dislpay? as when in nav mode directions are displayed there as well as on screen.

My only real critiscism is that it does not do full UK postcode searches only partial and then street etc.

Providing you get teh up to date navigation disc then you should have no problems

It definitely gets a  from me.

No maxidot... is that a requirement? I've read it is possible as a retrofit though.

It is possible ... See Stu's site ..... Not having it only means that the directions are on the MFD2 itself and will not appear in the display.

Still worth the investment

I too have thought about getting one of these but opted not to at the time of sale because a. I ain't paying £1350 for the option and b. I've already got TomTom on my PDA which obviously can be transferred from car to car. I did go for the maxidot option though.

I have seen some good deals on fleabay but still not sure if it's worth the investment over my trusty TomTom. The only way I may consider it is if the MFD2 is easy to install (I'm no handyman!) and how easy it may be to connect a TV tuner to it? My main concern though is the updates for the navigation - where can these be obtained and is it expensive?

My car is an Octavia MkII vRS which has the CD changer in the boot. Can a tuner or whatever be connected via the existing connection?

Get an MFD2 from ebay (there are plenty to be had but mainly from Eastern Europe but most suppliers appear to be reliable) for around £350-£400. Well worth the money and relatively easy to install  . It WILL work without Maxidot but you do lose some of the navigation functions from this display.

Get one! :D

I am also considering the upgrade and purchasing a Skoda Sat Nav unit from ebay... Is it worth paying the extra and getting the DVD model?

Can anyone confirm if the models will play CD's with MP3 tracks loaded as per the standard stream radio fitted to the vRS?

Thanks

Terry

I don't think you'll get a skoda branded DVD model, it'll be VW. Not a problem it'll still work.

I don't think any of them play MP3.

Great little units though and IMHO well worth the ££

Cool, thanks, I was kind of worried about ordering from a bod in lithuania but we will see (£45 postage! :( )

Dont be, there have been quite a few from here bought from there with no issues.

I'll go against the grain and say if you have a tomtom already, I'd save the money and buy a decent after market head unit and single dash kit.

Sounds a load better than any factory head unit, and the tomtom is better than MFD2 as well imo.

Of course, the non standard look isn't for everybody, but personally I love it ;)

MFD2 is okay, but not more than that. It's seriously showing it's age when compared to other products on the market today. As long as you only want basic satnav, combined with radio and CD changer, it'll be okay. If you want MP3 functionality or iPod control, then the MFD2 just doesn't cut it. There is an iPod interface, but it's very, very basic compared to the competition.

If you've already got a TomTom, then I'd stick with that for navigation, and then fit some kind of aftermarket head unit to get the MP3/iPod/AV functions.

I know that lots of people are very happy with the MFD2 unit, but having used one for several months prior to getting my vRS, I just wasn't impressed. I'm also not bothered about retain the manufacturer look, which I know is a concern for some people.

Best advice would be to find someone who's got one, and give it a test drive. If you like it, then go for it.

Bagpuss.

If you are worried that the MFD2 is showing its age then you could always buy a MFD3.

Touch-screen, hard disk, SD slots, DVD playback. Sounds good however they are still only VW brand and also over a grand.

 hope it won't be long for the MFD3 to hit the streets, very nice bit of kit!

SK_Rebel whereabouts are you?

If you let us know a general location then there may be someone in the vicinity who can show you one. ;)

I'd love to get my hands on one of those little fella's. VW always get all the good stuff first.

I need MFD3. Its not a want. Its not a desire. Its not an obsession. Its a need.

Does anyone want to buy any kids. I have 2 for sale or exchange for MFD3 (with disk, aerial and code). I'll throw in the car seats for free.

Strangely enough I've just been designing an eBay add - Kidney For Sale, Once Careful Owner.................

Does the Mrs know you're advertising her internal body parts ??

Sometimes sacrifices have to be made - she knows that :P ;)

:o
