ESP system faulty?

Featured Replies

I've searched this forum for info on this but haven't found a definitive answer:

My Mk2 Octavia Ambiente is 30 months old and is wearing the OS front tyre unevenly (the tread is almost bald for 4cm or so on the innermost side whereas the rest of the tread is wearing quite evenly).

I have had the tracking checked and found OK; could the ESP system be the cause?

According to the tome that came with the car, the system operates on that wheel when "triggered".

Any ideas will be welcomed:confused:

if the esp was at fault i would expect all teh tread to be scragged. the only reason for the inner or outer side to go first would be misalignment of the wheels. do you know exactly what they checked when looking at the tracking?

there are various means to check it, some are more complicated and more accurate than others. down here i use a company called elite. they check every aspect of the wheels. the camber, toe everything! its not cheap but ive had a long standing issue of tyre wear after i lowered the car, after various checks i went to them and they found the issue. its been spot on ever since!

A laser system was used to check the tracking....... it was suggested that the camber or caster angle(s) might need adjusting but the only place near here that does this would charge £100+ which is more than I am prepared to pay especially if the EPS system is at fault (this could be dealt with under warranty).

£100 is a bit steep for a full alignment check. I had the Corrado done after I put the koni's on it, and it was about 60 for caster, camber and toe check and camber and toe adjustment. Most places will only check toe angle, so a dodgy camber may not have been picked up, and could explain the uneven wear.

ESP will act on any of the wheels. I suspect it's not at fault.

I'm not an expert on the Bosch system, but I imagine that thoroughly checking operation might be tricky, and would probably involve checking the various accelerometers against calibrated instruments. In the first instance you might like to scan the car for fault codes. This is quite easy if you have the right cable or a friendly dealer. You might find someone near to you with a suitable cable if you post your (general) location.

have you had it on a fault diagnosis like a vag com?

Not had a diagnostic check yet; am waiting for the Skoda dealer to come back to me about this. Will post any info when I go further with the prob:(

Have now spoken to Skoda service bloke ... he states ESP will not cause uneven tyre wear and suggests 4-wheel tracking alignment, caster and camber checking is needed.

Will now get new tyres and watch the wear on the OS front before spending £100 or so:mad:

i spent nearly 100 quid getting mine all set up and its the best money ive spent!! the car felt soo much better after the setup. its well worth it when if the cars tracking etc is out you could be spending shed loads on tyres

I might be missing something here but ESP is an optional extra - is this something you chose or presuming the car has it? If you chose it what does it do in simple terms.

As a matter of interest, what mileage have you covered in 30 months?

My mistake:O , it seems that my handbook which refers to ESP only and does not mention ASR, has driven me along the wrong track:finger: . My Ambiente has ASR and not ESP as I at first thought.

Have now read through the myriad of threads in this forum on the subject of ASR and am now convinced that the uneven FOS tyre wear is nothing to do with the ASR system.

Car has only done 16K miles from new so, as I previously stated, I will keep an eye on tyre wear and only react if there is obviously a serious problem affecting the FOS tyre.

Many thanks for the interest that people have shown on this subject........... I think I'll leave it here now unless anyone comes up with a solution that is easily and cheaply available:thumbup:
