Changing Rear Discs/Pads?

Featured Replies

Please can someone tell me if you can just unclip the handbrake cable and clip it back on easily when changing the rear pads.

I have done a search and it doesn't seem to mention this.Haynes say you must undo the centre console to change them over!

Brake pad and rotor replacement - Passat World Forums

I just unclipped mine - used a screw driver to release it.

I don't remember unclipping mine, if I did, it wasn't difficult. Obviously the handbrake can't be engaged while you do this job so make sure the car is in gear and the wheels chocked.

No need to touch the cable.

NOpe as said dosnent need unvlipped. Just chock the front of the car, release the handbrake, wheel off and away you go.

One more query, I read in the Haynes manual that the caliper pin guide bolts need to be replaced during pad replacement. Can anyone confirm this ? Also what size are these bolts if one has to procure these before dismantling?

Some brake pad sets have these new bolts in the box with the pads . apec brakes do, but the last time i did it i bought the pads from Halfords they didn't come with new bolts , so i put a little blob of nutlock on the old bolts.

Why would you need to touch the handbrake cable? :P

Its so frustrating - the guy I bought the Passat from boasted it having new pads and disks front and back. Great, until it failed the MOT as the rear pipes had been clamped so hard they were crushed. He must have completely removed the caliper to do the brakes :rolleyes: Talk about making work for yourself!!!

Thanks, I am fitting Tarox which came with only the pads. Will try my luck with nutlock or similar.

I unclipped my cables, just because Haynes said to, but I didn't need to.

Aslong as the little lever arm on the calliper is back on its stop when the handbrake is off, then you don't need to remove the cable. But it only takes a second to unclip anyway.

I went for Mintex pads which came with new guide pin bolts, as do the genuine skoda pads. Just get some loctite on there if you don't have new ones.

Make sure you get a windback tool aswell! As i discovered the hard way that you have to rotate AND push really hard to push the pistons back on the rear! Garr

I'd also get some new disc retaining screws (1 per disc), as they can be a pig to get out.

I unclipped the handbrake cable, it only took a second.

I also enquired at skoda about the retaining pins. They told me that they have never replaced them. When I asked how much they were incase I needed them they said £15 each!!!!

I then went home, looked in the box for the new mintex pads and there were four already in there.

If you need a windback tool you can get one from Halfords that will fit for £20. It doesn't say VAG on the packet but it fitted mine with no probs at all.
