What pads should i get?

Featured Replies

I think i need new pads for the front of my fabia vrs! I've done 35k miles, is this a normal time to change them?

Im thinking of Ferrodo DS2500 pads as i've heard good things about them!(from other posts)

Is there much of a difference over the standard vrs pads and what should i expect to pay for a pair of Ferrodo pads/fitted:confused:

Cheers Paul

35k? How long is a piece of string? It depends on you and how you drive.

DS2500's are well over £100 a set and yes they are good.

Mintex Extreme are £40 and IMHO probably just as good. Over standard pads they have great initial bite even when cold, more feel and overall more stopping power. The also stand the heat better. The only downsides are the shims can wear if they get hot a lot and this will cause them to squeak a bit (This can be fixed with copper grease) and they tend to be a bit dusty but so to most uprated pads.

Don't go anywhere near EBC Green or Red, others might have different opinions but I have used both on the track and they are are a waste of money.

Yeah, I got mine from;

Motorsport World - Performance Car Parts

Good service too.

The Greenstuffs (Which were still £60) did about 600 miles on the road as I wanted to bed them in properly before a track session and they where unremarkable and didn't really stand out not being much better than the standards (Infact worse when cold). They then lasted 5 laps of Castle Coomb for me and I was lucky to get the car home after as they just disintegrated (And yes it was the latest spec formula).

Redstuffs (About £80) lasted about 2k and 4 laps of Coomb (Although I was ON IT that day!). I boiled the fuild and came off. They didn't so much disintegrate but went really hard and I though it had just glazed them and took them off to havew a look. There were a few cracks on the surface but nothing too bad, so I cleaned them up after a bit of resurfacing and put them back on. They were still awful and a few days later I changed back to standards because they were just bloody lethal.

Both EBC products I felt were a complete waste of money especially compared to the Mintex Extremes at £40

Another vote for the Mintex Extremes here too, fitted them to mine a few months ago, and I`m very impressed with them, and much cheaper than Ferodo`s.

Are these the right pads? Doesn't say vrs! Motorsportworld.co.uk

Manufacturer : Mintex

Category : Mintex Xtreme Pads - Front

Sub-category : Xtreme Front - Skoda

Ring them, I had 312's fitted and used TT pads.

Hi Paul,

I have Mintex Extremes all-round since before putting the Dragon box in, and they are indeed very good, plus less than half the price of Ferodos. Awesome sorted me out with the pads plus ZeroSixty discs all-round also for 500-odd quid (IIRC). They did develop a rubbing issue, but that turned out to be the warranty issue on the calipers rather than the discs / pads. Back when I was still trying to find out what was wrong, I gave them some real stick, as per this clip I shot to post on another thread at the time, and was doing pretty much constant 0-60-0s down a straight stretch of road for about half an hour!

(Well, OK, I'd be doing 0-60-0s down the straight bit, and driving 'normally' round the rest of the loop to get back to the straight bit - for half an hour!)

Not once did I feel as though I was going to have any problem stopping quickly, and although I wasn't measuring to be able to tell how long / how far the 60-0 would take, they're definitely in a different league to the OEM ones, that's for sure. And a decent price too (not much more than a full set of OEM brakes from the dealer), considering they and the discs won't last as long...

Remeber people. We get a discount with demon tweeks. :)

Found DS2000 good for road use but they will overheat on track. DS2500 Dont overheat on track. But they are noisy. All the observers from IAM think my brakes are on the way out :rofl:

Cant comment on other pads.

Greenstuff's are ok, but I'm currently running the Redstuffs. No probs with them at all and would happily recommend them :D

Mintex Extreme are worth a look, but check out Chris GB's thread about them warping his Brembo disks. I've also run DS2500's in the past but they weren't available for my car :(

Just been to Urban Racing and i've ordered the Mintex Extremes, get them fitted on tuesday £85 all in, which i thought wasn't to bad:thumbup:

I have a good price on these but debating whether to fit them to the front or not after the warping issues.

just stick 312mm's on and have done with it,i have and they are the best brakes i have ever used:thumbup:

I'm trying to work out if i can put a set of 312 from another 112*5 car on the octy II but no idea which parts are common as yet.

I have a good price on these but debating whether to fit them to the front or not after the warping issues.

They didn't warp my x drilled zimmermans despite 72 laps of Hullavington, including a 16 lap stint after which the brakes were so hot the green caliper paint went purple and flaked off. Just make sure they are run in properly.

Ahhh, so what do you think you will get with 312's with Mintex Extreme pads fitted?

Hi all, got my new mintex extreme pads fitted today but with some bad news:( i need new discs:thumbdwn:

Ive done nearly 36k and my disc's are f#ck#d, fronts are warped, abit rustey and worn out! I had a feeling they were warped cause at high speed when braking the steering wheel vibrates.

The mechanic said the back ones are nearly worn out aswel:( should last another 6 months!

Cant beleive they've only lasted 36k but i do drive fast at times:rolleyes:

I asked them for quote for new front disc's, standard vrs disc's £110 + £40 fitted

Tarox G88 disc's £200 + £40 fitted

Are these prices reasonable and should i get uprated disc's????

Cheers Paul.

Just wondering why you went for the £500 setup rather than the 312mm? Are these discs the business then?

I haven't fitted pads but will need some shortly, buy reading the various brake debates on here 312mm setup is the way to go.

I'd like to have green calipers at the front, there is a thread or two that details the correct Hammerite colour paint for the job :D if you get TT or Golf parts.

First off, £500 was for discs and pads all-round, and I was OK with the price, as it wouldn't have been much less for OEM discs and pads all-round from the main dealer (my yardstick for upgrades!)

I toyed with the idea of 312s, but sourcing the parts can be a PITA, and I couldn't be doing with fitting new calipers and repainting them etc. etc. when my brakes really did need doing ASAP!

The improved performance of the brakes is probably more to do with the pads than the discs, but after suffering dodgy brakes taking a D-road shortcut up in the Lakes, I wanted to make sure that if glazed pads was the problem rather than just fade, I wouldn't suffer from it again - hence the dimpled / grooved ZeroSixties! I've nothing to compare them to other than the OEM setup I had before, and they're definitely streets ahead of that. As I mentioned before, I gave them some real stick a few months ago, and not once did I feel they were losing power, even once they'd turned blue and had started to smoke! When I was on that run, 60-0 felt as though it only took 3 or 4 seconds, so it was plenty fast enough for me!

Depends on the age of the car. I have noticed the fabia discs (Front and rear) are quite rust prone and three years is about a limit for this, it's not all down to wear. The rears especially suffer from this as they are not used that much. I replaced mine after 50k (18 months from new) because the corrosion was so bad.

Do you realise how much money you could save if you got your handset dirty yourself? Pads and discs are about the most easy job you can do on a car after replacing a bulb. You can change a set of pads in about 1/2 an hour. If you did them yourself then you would be able to afford more ;)

Does anyone know why you have to replace the pads whenever you fit new discs?

Is it something to do with the running in period? Reason I ask is that the pads will be the same size (width wise not depth) and slot into the worn part of the disc no problem, you'd just bust the old ones getting the caliper past the lip.

I'm thinking of checking/ changing my pads soon due to excessive movement within the caliper and it got me thinking if my discs will require replacement soon, if so I'd have to do the lot otherwise face changing the pads again when the discs are done later.

My vRS was 3 years old in July, so maybe down to age rather than my driving  and backs one's are rusty:( but will last for a few more months!

As for getting my hands dirty im am gona change the discs myself - well sort of - my brother in law gona give me a hand but as he's changed loads of disc's in the past he'l probably do most of it:thumbup:

Dont no whether to get standard or uprated front disc's:confused: Standard vRS disc's are £65ish and the uprated one's start at £125ish (ebc) to £180 (tarox g88) from motorsport world. Are they worth the extra money:confused: Also i will (probably) only have my vRS for another 6 to 12 months!!!

Has anyone used Mintex Discs with the extreme pads?

Been hunting about, think the disc is part # MDC979 but couldn't find any reviews about them.

If these are mintex disc's then there at a bargain price £48, there cheaper than the standard disc's i've seen:confused:

Forget 'uprated' discs

OEM are generally some of the best you can get anyway
