Cheers Stu!!

Removing the turbo oil feed pipe is a job I never want to do again. What a bitch!

More bad news - stripping down the front end to change the radiator revealed the a/c fan blades not even attached to the motor. At over £150+VAT for a new one, I'm glad eBAY came up trumps and £69.99 buy it now for a genuine new one brand new!!

Assuming all the parts arrive I'm having Friday off so I can get it all back together so I can drive to work on Sunday. Fingers crossed.

Variable vanes inside the turbo - before cleaning!

Big mother of an engine crane!

New radiator

Hole where turbo once was

Cleaned inlet manifold - much better than the 1/2" of oily crud that was here before cleaned.

looks like its been a bit of a task

sorry just PMSL at the engine crane on the gravel path

i know you didn't have to move anything but i bet it was a pig to get the crane into position

have you been polishing inside that engine aswell , looks very clean

does your new cambelt whine when you rev your engine ?

Yep, was a bitch to move that crane about. :(

What looks clean? I'm ashamed at the state of everything!!! The engine hasn't been touched, all I've cleaned is the majority of sludge from the chassis rails and inside everything boost related. :)

Yes the cambelt does whine, was going to run it to my local independant for an opinion. What makes you ask?

Just to add - its had a new battery now too... Total bill is pennies over £1k. Ouch.

Nope none whatsoever. :)

Well done Tom,respect for undertaking such a task.I dont know your levels of mechanical expertise, but if they are only limited,it must take a stout heart to attempt such a challenge.

I keep toying with stripping/cleaning the intake manifold and EGR,but have nagging doubts about shearing bolts,or damaging something then wishing i'de left well alone.

Bloody good effort though mate.

Just seen this - good effort mate

Steve

Good effort matey indeed.

Your also lucky that as yours is a PD the oil pick up is at the front. The older TDi's and petrols had a gear driven one that dropped down the back and that made the sump even more difficult to get off.

Thanks everyone!!

Having done about 100 miles in her now, shes running lovely. No loss of coolant or oil, or evidence of leaks!

Only downer is the tensioner is noisy on the cambelt, makes a sort of "chuff" noise. Nothing is rubbing, and the arrow is lined up properly showing its at the correct tension. Theres no visible movement really, so I'm confused.

I think it might be faulty :(

  • 8 months later...

Sounds like it's been a lot of work Tom :(

I'd get rid before you spend too much on it

Have you considered swapping it for any of the following? Octavia Mk2 RS, Mondeo V6 or 328i SE. All splendid cars with low running costs IIRC, think someone here has owned all of them and could probably advise on the running costs and the pitfalls of ownership

;)

:D

How long before he locks this one? Any bets?

Is the Passat still for sale :rofl:

Is the Passat still for sale :rofl:

No, but I know someone who may soon be selling a 328i

No, but I know someone who may soon be selling a 328i

Think I'll pass on that, they are real money pits, especially the SE ones :(

:D
