Tcp/ip......

Featured Replies

Hi, not really a techy type so would appreciate some advice in plain English.... :o

I have just got a new computer which has Vista Home Premium as its operating system. On my old computer when I conected to the internet AOL told me it was connecting via 'DSL' now it say's its connecting via 'TCP/IP'.... is this an issue or problem

Second thing is are there any 'must have' updates for Vista via window's downloads. Had a look and there seem to be a fair few but not sure a) what they do or B) if I really need them

DSL is the type of connection used - i.e. broadband through a phone line.

TCP/IP refers to the protocols that computers use to talk to each other.

They are totally different things and it's just that Vista gives you a different message about what's being used.

Nothing to worry about at all.

Thanks for that... so still on broadband then

Any ideas on Vista updates?

Many updates are for security and bug fixes.

But - quite often - an update will screw your system up. Basically I get the system running as sweet as possible and then don't bother with updates - particularly if you've got good Anti-virus and Anti-spyware software installed and I'm sure plenty of people will be along to give you a plethora of opinions on those aspects.

Use Avast! Pro myself  .

My view on updates,

Always apply them, without them your vista install could become a magnet for spyware and trojan horse software. I have no issues with my pc, which has all the current critical and optional updates installed.

I am employed in the IT industry and look after more than 600 pc's running XP and Vista in a local government setting. We force all the computers to update automatically from our central server which is a mirror of Microsofts Windows update server, and I have never had a problem with any of the 600+ workstations breaking or having software problems due to the updates. I also have a go at fixing some staff members home computers, and the junk I find on these unpatched computers is scarey, the most common one being premium rate diallers, key loggers, the list goes on. After clearing the junk, each home pc that I fix is updated so that its bang upto date.

Thank's any direct link so I can do this?

If you go into the control panel you'll find an icon for Windows Updates that will let you check what's available and download them. From the small amount of playing I've done with Vista it seems to work well.
