Hi everyone, recently bourght a skoda octavia elegance 1.9TDI (y-reg), its the 110BHP version, i went to pick up the car and the wiper mechanism had all seized up which was rather annoyin, any way it was at the garage whilst the were checking it out and i noticed that there was a dangling plug and what looked like to be the mass air flow meter missing, it didnt even have a blanking plate there.

Is my car missing it, as its just had a MOT and was fine on emmisons etc, they garage said they didnt notice it and would check too see if it needed one or whether it just need a blanking plate, i would have thourght that all the TDI use the air flow meter, the car didnt seem as quick as i would of expected from a 110bhp diesel, is this maybe the reason why??

If the car was fitted with a MAF then you'll need one in it.

In the above image, the n75 valve is circled, but the MAF can be seen attched to the top left croner of the airbox with the large flexiable hose running off towards to the middle of the picture.

Just to put other people's comments into context, the MAF is required for various ECU functions, and removing it can help in fault-finding if you're trying to diagnose an issue. The car will run without it in a sort of 'limp mode', so it's not as though the car wouldn't start at all if it's missing. They're easy and cheap enough to replace - whether you want to argue the toss with the garage or just source and fit one yourself depends on your relationship with the garage - going rate for them on ebay is about 30 quid - search for 'Mass Air Flow'. Places like VAGParts charge more, but like with asking the garage to do it, it depends on how you feel about ebay...

surely the EM light would be on? as the ecu wouldnt be getting a signal at all.

im not too sure about skodas but i have seen loads of engine bays with loose connections before. some are for optional extras that arent fitted but are on the loom thats fitted to the car, others could be diagostic points.

Not sure the EM light will come on with the MAF unplugged... I am sure that when I have tried this on my car it has not come on, but there again maybe the light on the dash is broken!

Pre-ignition lamp test should show that up (two clicks on the key, but don't start it, if for some reason you didn't already know that :P ) - if the EM light doesn't light then, then it's blown. But I'd be surprised if it had! If the lack of MAF doesn't trip the EM warning light, then that'd be my first point of call.

Having said this, unless the previous owner has gone to the lengths of removing the MAF housing and replacing it with a piece of blank pipe, then there should be a thumb-sized hole in the inlet pipe where the MAF used to be...

Of course, a blanking plug will neatly fill a thimb-sized hole in a plastic duct. Which all takes us back to seeing a piccie, to know what's missing, which at least one of us will do.

It looks like a little engine on mine IIRC. SWMBO's car has an 'EPC' lamp (Engine Power Control?), but I don't know if this is in addition to the engine symbol...

Arh... maybe I have something like that. I'll make an effort to check when I start it up to go home tonight, but certainly don't recall having a light on when I drove it with the MAF disconnected.

I thought that was "engine management system"; I was wondering if the OP was referring to the glowplug light.

that first pic os spot on, the whole unit was missing, and there was no blanking plate, ive been told the car will run poorly with out the air flow meter, hence it may have semed abit slow for a 1.9tdi, im getting the car bk tomorrow hopefully, so will update you all, thanks for all the help though people :-)
