Weird research thing - any ideas?

Featured Replies

A few times now, I've been out stretching my legs at lunchtime and have seen a pair of Golf diesels driving down the A56 towards Chester in close convoy (way below the 'two second rule'). Not necessarily noteworthy in itself, but both cars have had a board attached to the front roof bar, running the width of the car, and about a foot high. Seeing how one's always been tailgating the other, the best I can think of is some sort of aerodynamics research. But then surely it's cheaper to do that sort of thing on a computer? Other options I've come up with is speed camera calibration / trials (although I've never seen any cameras), and insect population studies (no joke, I saw a thing on Countryfile where the Environment Agency counted the number of bugs splattered on a board stuck the the front of a Land Rover!) Mind you, the boards were matt black, so might not necessarily been any good for infra red / laser speed cameras, and if it was the insect thing, why are two cars in convoy?

Anyone got any better ideas? :)

My guess would be testing some form active distance control setup linked to cruise control. Lots of manufacturers are currently testing these sorts of things.

Wouldn't they do it on a private road/area? rather than tailgaiting down a public road?

Yep you would have thought so but also you've got to test them in real life situations containing trees, bushes, road signs, street lights etc. that test tracks don't have and that could all interfere with the radar systems they generally use.

Maybe ap0gee should jump out in front of them and see what happens!

probably from the Thornton technology centre at Shell Stanlow refinery, they used to have Astras , then some Polos , all with black boards bolted to the roof rack bar

they do research into fuels etc
