What does this sound like a recipe for?

Featured Replies

80% isopropyl alcohol

10% Toluene

5% Nitrobenzine

5% hydrogren peroxide

 Any ideas?

;) ;)

I dunno but I've got a friend selling a jeep cherokee. Even got a lpg setup - more bang for your buck

Irn Bru?

Something very flammable . . .

Something very explosive.

I'd say TNT from the ingredients but I am no chemistry or explosives expert.

Ask TeflonTom, he's the local terrorist :D

The 'toluene' strikes a chord with me - as someone said TNT mebbe

I sure hope it's not TNT. :D;) There's potential mongrelling involved. At first I thought it sounded a little like concentrate for washer fluid, but "nitrobenzine" sounds very Die Hard to me

If it involves you Jason I'd say it's a recipe for disaster!!!

Well, apparently it's the new unofficial "millers" in the diesel world. A little "something" to chuck in with the diesel to give a better, faster combustion process - which obviously means more power. :D (and something which is apparently fairly useful when running smokey uprated injectors in the PD engine ;)) We are talking seriously small dilution though. Roughly 200ml at most in with a full tank of diesel. BOOOOOOM!

Be very very very careful about he order in which you mix them or you won't be around to tell us it failed.

Nitrobenzene is pretty nasty stuff and toluene (1-methylbenzene) mixed with nitrobenzene under the wrong conditions could land you with picric acid, which is not very nice stuff and will go bang.

Getting hold of the IPA probably won't be an issue, getting hold of toluene might be more difficult and getting hold of Nitrobenze will be more so.

The hydrogen peroxide is easy enough to get but harder to get pure these days without a visit from the local plod or a menezies incident

Make sure you have suitable storage containers, suitable drip fed reaction vessels and a fume cupboard (i'd recommend class A) before you even think about mixing them.

Also get yourself a copy of the Hazcards for what you are using so you can see how you are about to give yourself health problems.

Make sure you have a big power extinguisher and a essential piece of advice is do not under any circumstances wear latex gloves. The IPA soaks through these and if you have a fire of any description it will be slowly leaching out of the latex and will set fire to your hands. I have seen pictures of what happened to somebody at my uni who did that and the results are not nice.

PS, as an ex Chemist, I think this is quite possibly one of the most mad things you have done. No disrespect.

Oh, it's mad, but apparently it really helps a diesel. Been told that HDPE bottles are about the only thing capable of storing this stuff. As for mixing it? No idea whatsoever. As for getting the stuff? No idea whatsoever. I wonder what the IPA does on it's own without the other ingredients?

I took a little look at some of the chemicals on wikipedia. Was a little scarey and I did see TNT mentioned.

TNT is a benzene molecule with a methyl group at postition 1 and 3 nitro groups attached to the ring. It is highly unstable and if you bash it you will cause it to explode.

Picric acid is with 1 nitro group and still unstable.

IPA burns well and Hydrogen peroxide is an strong oxidising agent. Burning is the process of oxidising so if you mix these two you will quite likely get a fire. You would need to have that very cold at the minimum to stop a fire and probably more.

Mixing the other two means you could get Picric acid or worse.

A highly unstable compound that explodes without warning plus a source of fire means if you don't get this spot on right you will end up a crater.

I'm really really really asking you please to not try this without complete instructions from a competent chemist.

And, as if the Cheezemonkhai warning was not enuff, I remember picric acid from my 'thriller novel' ramblings and it is very nasty stuff.

Rubbish - an old oil drum will do the job.

As for mixing it? No idea whatsoever.

Old oil drum again there too!

As for getting the stuff? No idea whatsoever.

I'm surprised at you, Jase - eBay? :D

Or you could just run the pre-made stuff that Millers sell ;)

Is that an offer, mate? ;) I'll bring my plastic safety goggles. That'll protect me from the house levelling explosion I cause.

I did most of a chemistry degree a few years ago before I changed courses and wouldn't want to make it myself out of a lab, so no no offer.

Also seriously, 5L of millers is probably cheaper too.

I mean you are probably talking about £5-10 to get a litre of the raw ingredients for this and you use 200ml per 50L tank compared to say 100ML of millers for that same tank when double dosed.

The sums just don't add up IMHO.

Damn, beat me to it!

You're not kidding! :smirk:

Jason, you've already looked too much into this.

If you can't buy it off the shelf, then its not worth considering. :)

Why not just gaffa tape some solid fuel rocket boosters to the roof rails?

To anybody who skipped the rest of the thread...

DO NOT TRY THIS!

So what your trying to say is this is Darwin award material?:D
