I haven't been this happy in ages!

Patsy who smashed her sump over 3 weeks ago now has the sump off!!:thumbup: Engine crane arrived at 8.45 this morning, and just this minute got the thing removed!

I'm also feeling pretty smug, as despite many people on UK Passats, Haynes and even VW Master Technicians ;) advice, you do NOT need to drop the subframe. You do need to undo the engine and gearbox mounts, and raise the engine until its touching the bulkhead, but you can get the sump off! Less than 10mm space to spare, but its possible! That means I don't need to do the geommetry afterwards, only 2 bolts to replace for the gearbox mount (instead of god knows how many for the subframe), and I didn't have to trust my bit of 2x2 to support the car with no wheels on

:):):)

Photos and more of an update later.

:rofl::rofl: blimey 2x2, that's over engineered for holding a car up:O

anyway, well done, it's a pig of a job to do

I'll save you the bother posting the photos:

 indeed!!!!

New one is now on. :)

Be smug if you like ;)

Having said that I dont do it on the floor so dropping the subrame is a darn site easier when its up there. Also we shall see who is smug if it leaks, hope you didnt disturb the sealer when putting it back on.

And you dont need to do wheel alignment when you have taken the subframe off, I told you that.

Oh yeah I get three hours to fit one, not three weeks ;)

Also am I right in thinking you still have the front end off?

what sealer he says:rolleyes:

what sort of sealant do vw use on them ross?? i allways use black high temp silicone and i've never had problems with it... i seem to remember that rover used green hylomar on thiers... horrible stuff:)

The sump sealer on the modern aluminum sumps is a white stuff, and tbh its ace if you keep it on. No gaskets anymore.

well done Tom - good to hear you got it sorted.

"The sump is off, YAY!

Not something you usually hear on a passionate Briskoda drive out. ;)

Ross, wasn't having a dig mate in any way, I'm just dead chuffed I didn't have to drop the subframe!!! Always feels nice to beat the odds!

In a workshop, on a ramp then I'd be dropping the subframe for sure. The thought of doing that on the drive though was a bit worrying.

It went on just fine! Had a second pair of eyes watching as I levelled it up to go on, just to make sure I didn't disturb the nice bead of sealant :)

The jobs not finished yet! To be honest it will probably be 3 days work for everything I've done, rest of the time was just sourcing parts. :)

Really annoyed the EGR hasn't arrived yet (apparantly dispatched on Monday  and neither has my undertray and fixings from VAG Parts. Ho hum.

Regardless, only the cambelt to swap and the front end to put back on, top her up with oil and its back in business!!

I know you wasnt having a dig mate ;)

Wondered how you did it as ive tried it myself. But if you have the front end on you cant lift the engine up that high as the front mount wont allow it and the viscous fan tries to poke its way through the rad.

I think thats the nail on the head. :) To be honest though, I've done some pretty extreme dismantling!!!

would have been quicker to drop the subframe :sofahide:

The question isn't how you do it - it's if you get it done or not......Which leads to the question:

How many Briskodians does it take to change a sump?

Answers on a postcard please....

Just the one! :)

It may have been quicker to drop the sump, but you really need a ramp with pillar jacks.

Car is running just lovely now!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Had to put the old EGR on and bodge the actuator with some tape and a splint, but it will do until the replacement arrives.

Also zip tied the wheel arch liners to the chassis to make do until the new belly pan turns up. New thermostat on its way too...

But for now its perfectly drivable!!:thumbup:

well done Tom , good work
