Just Dragoned my PD100

Featured Replies

Fitted a Dragon box to my PD100 today and realized I'd made a huge mistake - I should've fitted one years ago:thumbup:.

I recon I got a bit of a bargain aswell, paid £175 from the Dragon ebay shop instead of the £195 asking price - first time I've ever been sucessful with a 'best offer'. It could be a remanufactured unit but it comes with the usual 30 day money back, 3 year warrenty and I recon when the time comes, I can re-sell for £125-150.

While the bonnet was up, I took the opportunity to clean the MAF and air filter (it's a K&N but I oil very lightly), I also had a quick look a the EGR which appears remarkably clean given some of the horror storries I've read hear. At 140k miles I thought it was going to be choked - must be the way I drive;).

Anyway, the difference in performance is significant! And even with the box on it's highest setting I'm still not seeing any smoke. All in all I'm well pleased and would recommend the Dragon to anyone.

I offered £175 for one a while ago, and it was refused :(

Got one on mine recently as well (VRS)

Much much quicker....

My only gripe is a jerk around 2k in 2nd gear.

But other than that its mint.

Don't suppose you've got / seen a rolling road plot for the vRS Joel?

Theres one on the Awesome Rolling Road day results, I also think I've seen one on a Superb PD130 someone. But I seem to remember the results varied a lot!

Mine's exactly the same - you can sometimes feel it even on a realy light throttle as the electronics kick in - still chuffed with it though.

I havnt got a rolling road nope.

But it is DEFINITELY faster.

And I've only had it on for about 2 hours driving time on setting 5 out of 7.

My housemate has a Focus 2.0 TDI 136bhp and he commented on how much quicker it was is now looking at one for his

This is the nature of rolling roads! However, as Joel's pointed out, it does really make a noticeable difference and certainly improves the way the power is delivered which is more important than headline figures, imho.

To be fair... there must be a pretty significant increase in power as otherwise I wouldnt have noticed a difference.

glad you're happy, when Rob had one on his PD100, it would give our vRS's (standard) a run for their money.... it'll make it about 140bhp in my opinion....

I've got the same engine, definately considering one of these in the future.

Only thing stopping me is that I'm 18 (1 yr nc), so not sure what insurance is gonna say when I declare. Plus I have a 12 month warranty atm.

...and still looks like a little 1.4 petrol = much fun:D.

Forgot to say it will get faster over the few weeks

yes, yes I do :) Thanks!

How come yours was rolling roaded at 175, whereas that one at awesome only made 155. I know different cars, days, rollers, but still thats quite a difference.

all depends other things ...K&N filter and the length of time it has been fitted to the car

Doesnt it also depend what setting the box was on ?!

I think all the sttings do is alter the way it delivers extra fuel at different times.....ie no more power but peaks at different places on the rev range

I must admit that I couldn't feel a lot of difference between the 7 settings.

Hi teedeeye, I'm quite interested in finding out more about the Dragon box you fitted. I have a 1.9DTi that has done just over 110k and I'm looking at the most economical way of getting more power without spending too much money.

Please could you enlighten me. Thanks

For what its worth, I was on the rollers in my standard PD130 and it made 156bhp. I think a 20bhp gain from a Dragon is about right tbh!

Ric's Fabia (ric04vrs) ran with his Dragon box at the Awesome RR day the other week. Made just shy of 150 at the fly and around 260 lb/ft. Results are here: Awesome GTI Store UK - Rolling Road

If you wanted to compare, the black Fabia directly below his is standard. And then to compare against a custom map, mine is the black one in the 2nd column, 2nd from top :)

Sounds good value for money from Dragon though; glad you're pleased

This Find Skoda 1.4 + 1.9 PD + 2.0 PD + 2.5 V6 Tdi EXTRA POWER! on eBay within Chips, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-Nov-07 18:54:54 GMT) is the box in question. Do a search on this site (or any other VAG diesel forum) and you'll find loads of info. They make various different units for many modern diesels but started out specializing in the VAG PD TDI and from what I can gather, its us lucky PD owners that seem to benefit most consistently.

Anyone will tell you quite rightly that a re-map will offer more power/torque in a more refined (end user definable) manner. However, like you my car has done more than a few miles (currently 142k) and I was looking for an economical solution. The fact that I can remove, transfere or re-sell the box is a major benefit for me. Resale values seem to remain particularly strong as the full retail price is £299 and Dragon only offer the discounted price on ebay now and again. Now would probably be a good time to buy as they very quickly accepted my offer of £175. They work by adjusting the fuelling only (not boost) so may in fact be kinder to a high mileage engine.

I've only had mine fitted for a day but am still more than pleased wth it. In fact yesterday I was making excuses to go for a drive - it's so much fun! I managed to do battle with a PD130 Passat and totally anialated him 0-80mph! Some report more diesel smoke but I have never in 3 years seen smoke from mine, not before and not now with the Dragon (I do have a K&N filter). That probably suggests my engine could handle even a bit more fuelling? Dragon also suggest upto 10% better economy, well it's too early for me to say. The computer is indicating a slight improvement (mine was always very near spot on) but I do wonder if that may now be rather inaccurate as the ECU is being fooled. Dragon also suggest smoother acceleration, so far that is not the case for me. There is a definite jump in torque at about 1800rpm. This is obviously programmed in to correspond with the boost coming on tap, but it can make for very slightly lumpy progress on a light throttle.

If you're still unsure about justifying the expense, do like me and convince yourself it's only really costing £50 'cos you'll get so much back when you re-sell .

Gonna try some Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 in it tomorrow if I can find some :D.

What do the jumper pin settings actually do?

Did you start it off on 7?

Mine is currently on 5

This is a bit of a double edged sword. They're kinder to the turbo as they don't up the boost, but they likely "overfuel" more than a remap to achieve similar headline figures.......

Well, that actually caused a bit of confusion to start. The instructions that came with mine were, to be blunt, Andrex! They do mention the jumpers and there is an illustration, trouble is the illustration is different to my box! Mine came with the jumper on #6. However, according to my crappy instructions this was in fact #2. The instructions say that from left to right the power decreases, so obviously I move the jumper to far left. I then found a reference on the Dragon website that said the power increases left to right - as you would logically expect. So I tried the jumper over to the right and decided it definitely felt quicker. So that's were it's stayed - on pin #7 (I think)! To try and clear this up I emailed Dragon yesterday lunchtime and am sorry to report that I've yet to get a reply. If I get time I might ring them tomorrow.

So when you say you're on 5, do you mean 5 from the right (looking into the box with PCB at the bottom)?

With the jumpers at the bottom is 5 FROM THE LEFT

2 FROM THE RIGHT
