My new toy (and everyday runaround)

Featured Replies

Well I got bored of sensible practicallity, and seeing as there is only ever me in my car really, and I dont have anything to cart around, I decided to swap the estate for somethin a little more interesting.

The choices were

S2000

225TT/S3

RX8

or Elise

Tried an RX8, didnt really like it, it felt heavy and hard work

The Honda dealer wouldnt let me try a S2000, so they obviously didnt want my money

Tried a S3, nice car crap seat, that was enought to put me off, as for the TT they are everywhere.

So an Elise it was.

With a rover engine and 120bhp, it sounds a little lame, but its actually a hoot.

0-60 in the book is around 5.5 secs, and I can belive it, it is noisy mostly suffering from road noise, it is set very stiff, so bumps and potholes have to manovered around as best as possible, it has a coulpe of squeaks and rattles, but is suprisingly good considering.

It is happy pootleling around town, in traffic and being used to its potential. What every I do with it it always makes me smile.

Boot space is pretty uesless, but hey I dont need a boot. The seats despite a lack of padding are actually very comfortable.

The challenge of getting in and out is not so bad once you get the hang of it, but always provides amusment at the expence of those who want a ride.

Very nice. Good luck with it

Very nice,

If its the rover K series engine, then check the water level regularly. The K series engine has a knack at going through headgaskets.

doesn't a 1.8t engine slide into those as well ;):D

Have fun with it mate

My mate has one, Nice motor:

Cheers for the comments Guys.

I know the reputaion the K seires has, but apperently the cooling in these is good enough to stop it going too often. When it goes I will replace the gasket with a competition one, (all metal I think) and as standard the head sits on plasic dowls and replacing these with metal helps too im told. thanks for the waring though.

I dont know about the 1.8T, (i dont see any reason why it wouldnt though) but it does seem common to take the civic type r engine and slide that in, with around 220 bhp.

I have size 11's (to go with all 6 ft 1 of me) so not exactly small, I do have to wear the slimest trainers I can find though to make sure i only press the pedals I want to press.

As for getting in and out there really is a knack to it.

Should any female passengers with skirts on wish to come for a ride, I would obviously be the perfect gentelman and hold the door of the lady in question whilst she slides in, and when it comes time for her to get out i can try and talk her thought the best method of exit from inside, I feel that that is only fair.

Nice one starch. Will you be coming to the monthly meet in it :)

Very nice mate

Bet its a right laugh to drive on a nice smooth road (if you can find one)

Always fancied a vx220 myself

enjoy it

I could bring her but it would require a sergical procedure to remove her from boy friend, which would no doubt result in much sulking.

I think they are back on thurs so with any luck I shouldn't have too many problems.

nice toy you have there, me likes it a lot

Really wanted one.Plumped for mx5 as was worried about reliability of the elise (I'm no mechanic). Also I need a boot of some sort to get my cricket bag in!

Very jealous.....one of my favourite cars

(is it rude to ask what you paid?!)

  • Author

Lets just this was advertised at 10K, and I paid a little less than that.

If you looked hard enough, and was prepared to do some basic work I would imagine you could pick one up for £6000 ish

As cars go I dont think one of these would be too bad to work on, for any engine work its easy to remove the rear clam, and being so basic and designed by turnip farmers in a shed in Norfolk (no offence to any workers at Lotus), so long as the chassis is straight there isnt really any damage that cant be repaired., and there isnt much that is really difficult to access.

I think the hardest thing with these is trying to decide when there is a new noise that is something that needs fixing, cause there are just so many noises all the time, but its fun, and im willing to jack it up in the garage once a month or so to check it over to make sure. Its never going to be the most reliable car in the world but it could be a lot worse.
